Hi Guys,

I have 2 first-generation HomePods, which I use as a stereo pair for sound. I’m curious to know If I also want to use a HomePod Mini to watch movies along with the stereo HomePods, the Mini would be positioned behind my couch at my ear position. I know only two HomePods can be paired for stereo. So, what happens to the third HomePod Mini? Will it not produce sound? Will it not play in sync with the other two HomePods, which are playing in stereo? Will it create a louder sound, like a home theatre experience? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this?

I’ve done this before. You would have to AirPlay to the Mini each and every time you want to do this. The sound will come through just fine and it will also be in perfect sync, however, you will not be getting theater surround sound effects. It will just be the regular sound of whatever you’re watching being produced from behind you. With regards to volume, the cool thing about AirPlay is you can adjust the volume setting of any speaker in the group individually. So you can have that Mini play as loud or as soft as you’d like.

If you want true surround sound with theater like effects, I wouldn’t recommend a set up like this. I’ve been using Sonos for my Home Theater (Arc + Era 300 x2 + Sub x2) and the HomePods are not even in the same league.
