Can anyone give me a reason why both QT X with Perian and VLC take forever to open any MKV file I open while MPlayerOSX Extended opens MKV files immediately and plays them fine?

All three have smooth playback once they finally start but damn, it takes way too long for QT or VLC to even get the file opened.

I assume these MKVs have subtitles embedded?

There's a bug in VLC related to fontconfig which causes long delays in opening MKVs with subtitles in Snow Leopard.

With QT/Perian i believe it's something to do with the way it parses MKVs, although from what i remember opening the file should be instantaneous you just have to wait until the whole file is loaded before being able to skip around in it.

I just use Mplayer for MKVs.
