A Hillside teenager will appear in federal court today on charges he planned to detonate what he thought was a car bomb outside a downtown Chicago bar.

Adel Daoud, 18, was arrested following a months-long FBI undercover investigation. He was taken into custody after he parked a Jeep Cherokee in front of the bar Friday night and walked into a nearby alley where he tried to detonate the device, court documents allege.

The bomb, which was inert and had been constructed by FBI technicians, didn't explode, according to federal authorities.

Daoud was targeting U.S. citizens because of what he perceived as American abuses overseas and because the U.S. is at war "with Islam and Muslims," according to an FBI affidavit.

Daoud was charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to damage and destroy a building by means of an explosive.

Authorities did not disclose the name of the bar.

Daoud acted alone on Friday, although at one point he had recruited a partner, who later dropped out of the plot, according to the affidavit.

n May, two undercover FBI operatives started communicating with Daoud, who expressed interest in carrying out a violent jihad, either in the United States or abroad.

Daoud, a U.S. citizen, allegedly gave one of the agents a handwritten list of 29 potential targets in the Chicago area.

His family declined to comment Sunday. He remains in custody pending the preliminary hearing scheduled for Monday afternoon at the U.S. Dirksen Courthouse.

If your point is that religion sucks, I would have to agree. If you just want to point the finger at Muslims, I'll refer you to Eric Rudolph, who actually perpetrated many bombings. Maybe you've heard of him- very famous "Christian", doing the Lord's work.

Anyone notice all the high profile terrorism cases in the last few years that have been stopped, have usually been the FBI pawning off a fake explosive to some young guy with issues?

Its happened 3 or 4 times now.

    Curious.

It's like these people turn to whoever will work with them to pull off a bombing...and the only ones there are the FBI.

I can only assume the OP will give Obama credit for stopping terrorism. ;)

Looks likely to be honest. I've heard the BBC making the same claim.

More like, show the public once in a while that we can stop a plot (provided of course that we do all the logistical planning beforehand) and use a confused (usually unhinged) young person as our patsy.

Gotta feel safe at home before the elections ;)

They've got to keep the terrorist dream alive in order to receive the funding to fight the domestic terrorism somehow.

Yet another example of how stupid violent extremists (of any kind) are. There really is no limit to their idiocy.

    How so?

You'll find the FBI is very persuasive when trying to lure someone. A single person vs the resources & planning of a massively complex (and powerful) intelligence agency? I don't see how that makes the guy stupid.

What he was aiming for (the actual bombing) is an atrocious plot, but clearly this guy didn't have near the ability to pull it off without the FBI supplying him.

How does an 18 year old boy get his hands on an ineffective bomb built by the FBI?

Do they just assemble them in a random garage and leave them with a note "use with caution"? Is there an app for FBI-bomb assembly and pick-ups?

It involves a very complex operation on one side, and a dumb patsy on the other....

I know they didn't disclose the bar, but do you know which one it was?

He wasn't an Arab or Muslim, all their efforts are concentrated on those groups.

So the FBI find a WMD, I think that they should tell George 'W' and Tony because they have been looking since 2003.

Of course it not difficult to find something, that you made your self and gave to the person. It's cases like this that make me very glad that our police are not allowed to use entrapment. It is like planting evidence.

That happened here in Portland last year. Seems the gov't. is trying to induce people to do this stuff. It is entrapment. Plain and simple. And should be illegal.

Who would you rather they turn to?

    ----------

So you meet someone who claims to be from a terrorist organization. They try to convince you to bomb a nightclub, and will provide you the materials to do so. You would agree to do it?

Careful lee, your Christophobia is showing again. You just can't resist taking a swipe, can you, even when it's not relevant in any way to the thread. Bigoted comments like these don't help your case, you know.

Despite the term Christphobia being slow as ****, a Phobia is an irrational fear and mainstream Christians have given people plenty of reasons to fear them and their grab for power.
