My AirPods attained sentience and started playing their own music

I got onto the elliptical machine in my basement for a workout this morning, intending on using my 2nd gen AirPods to listen to the sound on the game I was playing on my iPad. I generally leave the AirPods connected to that iPad. The iPad sound wasn't coming through the pods, and when I looked in the list of BT devices, the pods didn't show up at all. I figured the batteries were dead and went ahead with my workout, but left the pods in my ears.

A few minutes later, I noticed very faint music coming through the AirPods. It was definitely a random sampling of the music on my computer/devices (unless someone else was listening to John Coltrane, the Monty Python "Dennis Moore" routine, and the Rufus Wainwright cover of "Hallelujah"). There was no music playing on my iPad, and when I checked my phone later, it wasn't connected to the AirPods. Neither was the laptop. My desktop doesn't have bluetooth. None of them were playing music of any sort in any case. I reset the AirPods and now they are back to working normally.

I have no explanation. Any ideas?

Do you have an Apple watch? I’ve had the watch just start mysteriously playing music to the airpods pro.
