My external harddrive mounts Twice!

So my new ms-dos formatted Maxtor 200 gig drive has suddenly started showing two drive icons on the desktop, but only one in the sidebar. There's also only one instance in system.log for it mounting.

If I throw them both in the trash to unmount, one disappears in a reasonable amount of time, but the other hangs around until I doubleclick it.

I do not have any partitions.

I did try and rename the all-caps drive name to lowercase one day, but it went back to all caps.

why MS-DOS format? why not FAT32 or NTFS? can MS-DOS even handle 200GB?

So, I can pack up the drive and bring it over to my PC friend's house and still get at all my stuff.

edit: well, i don't know exactly what format - it's however it came out of the box. I just plugged it in and began using it.
