My father passed away yesterday, almost exactly 1 year after I converted him from Android to iPhone 12 Pro.

Now I may have no way of unlocking it. Not that I'm actively trying. He kept things all over other devices he owned, so I could get needed data from them.

However, I'm just so sad. I was thinking about getting him the much bigger iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Edit: I wish to thank all the kind words posted by everyone.

First of all, sorry for your loss.
If you need assistance with unlocking the device maybe Apple has procedures for that.

I am so sorry for your loss, hope you get well. I unfortunately don't think you will be able to access the device, except if you find somehow the code

I have no idea how you're feeling right now. When my grandmother passed away I felt so awful and bad and I cried so much.
I'm so sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately, as far as I know only Apple can help you. I don't think you can access his data.

Can you please tell us what Android phones he had and what version they were on? Also, maybe guys at ida-developers could help you

I‘m sorry for your loss. ? my granddad passed away on 9 November after having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on 9 October. He had a brand new iPhone 13, he was so excited to get it. Only got to use it a few weeks. Apple were great, we explained the situation and they refunded us for the 13 as my grandma needed the money for the funeral.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Lost my dad a couple years ago, and the following couple weeks were just brutal. Sending love and light to you this holiday season, and I hope that you're somehow able to access the phone with Apple's help ♥️

I'm very sorry for your loss. The phones have a feature now that let you unlock phones in the very sad event that something like his happens by adding you to their list of contacts for this purpose. That feature probably isn't going to help you now, but if you contact Apple I'm sure they have scenarios in which they can help out with this, I hope.

While your dad unfortunately passed away (so has mine) maybe respect his wishes and not pry into his digital life?
If he wanted others to see his digital life, he wouldn’t have used a passcode.

Ask yourself- would you want family members poking through your iPhone if you suddenly died today?
If you do - share your passcode with them right now.

Very sorry for your loss.

I lost my dad in 2020, and my mum gave me his old iPad - used once, then put back in the box and not touched again.

With proof of purchase, Apple (eventually) helped me to wipe/reset it (I didn’t have the password) — maybe thats an option, if you want to at least use the device from scratch?

Solid point there. Never actually thought of it this way before.

Sorry to hear about your loss. When a loved one passes it’s never easy. I hope you can find peace with family, friends, and other loved ones at this time.
I have some advice to share because I just recently got my grandpas iPad unlocked after his passing.
After his passing we found his old iPad and unfortunately no one knew his passcode or apple ID password. Even worse, we couldnt reset his apple ID password because the email with the rest link was his apple ID that was password protected with the password we needed to reset. ?
I tired wiping the iPad but that didn’t work because activation lock was on. What worked was a long process with apple. Many phone calls, and a 6 week waiting time to finally have my grandpas Apple ID deleted. That was the only way to remove the activation lock. Fortunately, my grandpa didn’t use the iPad very much so we don’t lose any sentimental data.
If you can’t rest you dads password and you can live with wiping his devise, then I’d call apple and ask them to have his apple ID deleted. Again, you will lose everything that he bought with his Apple ID and saved on his device.
If by chance you have the box and the recipet or other proof of purchase, apple can help you much faster. We didn’t have that so it took several weeks.
Best wishes with this and have a Merry Christmas, Happy holidays, and Happy New year.

So sorry to hear that buddy, I know what is gone is gone never gonna come again, but it's a living reality you can't help it, bro, things will be different From now on, but you have to adjust with the things. And talking about the Iphone issues I agree with the @mctskater this is the only way to solve the issue. And Try to spend more time with your family.
