Basicly, he, an Ubuntu user, sees there's a new version. He figures he should download it from the apple website. He gets the Combo update, and now the macbook won't shut down. How can he fix it?

Has he got stuff plugged into it?

Try using the hardware power button, hold it down for 10 seconds or so

Yep, this would be me. :D

Well actually the MacBook wouldn't shut down before the update.

I figured the update would fix this, so I installed the 10.5.3 Combo Update.
Only later I figured out that this was for 10.5.0 users, not 10.5.2 users.

Is there any way to revert this update and downgrade to 10.5.2?

Also, can somebody help make the MacBook shutdown?
(I tried Apple Logo >> Shut Down and the Power Button Shut down, but no luck.) :|
(I don't want to resort to force-quitting since I hear that's bad.)

So.....can anyone help me with shutting down?

Apple Logo >> Shut Down or Power Button Shut Down doesn't work.

I tried Apple Logo >> Shut Down/Restart/Log Off and waited 1 minute for it to shut down automatically.
The menu bars and windows just disappeared, but the Dock remained where it was.
I click on an icon on the Dock and everything--the desktop icons and the menu bar/panel--comes back.

Can anyone help?
