My Mac doesn't load an external drive and Disk Utility shows “Virtual Whole Disk” on red letters

    Hi,

    I have a 1 TB WD My Passport. I'm desperately trying to connect it to my iMac, but it's not recognized.

    I've even tried to format it, but all I get is this:

    Repair disk doesn't work. You can see it by yourself:

    Needless to say the drive has little use, so I doubt it's been damaged.

    Thank you. You saved my day, sir.

    In fact the drive was encrypted. The procedure described in the article worked perfectly.
