Ok I've figured it out.

My watch wanted to do a mileage run*. Sneaky clever watch.

*What is a mileage run?

Someone reported in previous year iPhone shipments, that the customs paperwork gets done in Louisville ahead of arrival, and shows up in the tracking like this. So the device wasn’t actually in Louisville yet, just paperwork getting done or similar.

Not sure if this is still true, but if so it would be a more logical explanation than flying back-and-forth

what do you mean.. "the scans are catching up" ?
The package gets scanned by the shipper at several points along the way. This is for customs checks, tariffs, etc. for large shipments like this, it gets done in bulk. Therefore, they could have finished some paperwork in the US and “scanned” it in before it actually left China.

I don't believe this. Showing paperwork in the tracking system would defeat the purpose of the tracking system. This question the reliability of the system if paperwork appears as a scan...

Agreed. It's supposed to show where the package actually is.

Not a paperwork mythology.

How could UPS manage that?

Unless they have a "mirror" tracking of every single package "here's where the package actually is"

No matter where it is, you will still get on Friday.
I am 100% confident I will get it on Friday. Apple has always delivered on time.

And yet, I am a curious person.

I want to know the actual answer for why status shows as it does.
Hypothesis are welcome of course since I guess no one knows the actual answer.

mira ur right to know. But in the end dues it matter. I am pretty sure tracking just got jumbled, it never went back and forth. My guess.
