I put Airtags on 4 things so far:
  • (My account) My Keys
  • (My account) The dog
  • (My account) My backpack
  • (Wife's account) her keys
My wife got a notification today that my Keys have been following her haha. Due to Covid, we are almost always together. I have to say I DO find it annoying that the concept of "family" isn't figured into these alerts. She disabled the Keys notification indefinitely, but I'm sure in a day or two she'll get notified about the Dog and the Backpack, and I'll probably get an alert about her keys.

Doesn't seem like a big deal, since when you get the notification, you are given the option to disable that notification for that specific Air Tag.

Not a big deal in this situation, but if it is a common problem then it increases the chances of false alerts popping up on phones in all of the situations that have been discussed over the past few weeks where we were all saying that it isn’t applicable due to the owner being there.

Especially if it happens for people who can’t permanently turn it off.

It isn't a big deal, but it seems to be pointing at a bug or bad implementation.

It was my understanding that so long as ME (the tag owner) is WITH the tag, it should not generate this alert. I was...at all times. Furthermore, My wife and I have so many shared data points one could use to infer that we live together that if what I experienced wasn't a bug... it might be something they need to address in the future.

Who wouldn't be able to turn it off? The notification itself has the option to turn it off.

How can they not have the family functionality when they had these things pretty much ready to go nearly two years ago with that 2019 packaging?

Only family members can permanently turn it off. Most people can just turn it off for the day.

So, if it isn’t picking up you being there then it could be very annoying for people who often travel places with friends.

For example someone who gets a lift home from a friend.

I put my key in my wife's bag and she went shopping. She never got notified that my tag was following her. This feature is not consistent.
