Navigon released a press release this morning, stating that v1.2 will be out for Europe soon and will feature text-to-speech and integrated iPod controls (so you won't have to leave the program to change playlists or songs). It will also feature auto day/night modes.

Great! Now I hope TomTom gets off their duffs and announces what their first update will bring. Hopefully, TTS, lane assist, and a $30 price cut, so they can sell more...

Very cool! I have not yet made a purchase, but after reading this, I think this is the one I'm going with.

Question for anyone that will answer, hopefully wording this correctly. I'm very used to using Google maps for getting around when in unfamiliar areas. Example; when on vacation in Orlando last June, I need to run out for some stuff for the kids, and beer :), and simply searched for a walmart in the area. Google maps finds all within the area I currently am, and I can select one, and map directions to it from there. I know this might be a dumb question, but does Navigon do the same thing? Or must I have the actual address of the location I which to go to? i.e., not just be able to type walmart, or taco bell, or whatever?

    Did that make sense? Thanks!

    Very nice Navigon!

Now...I hope that tomtom wakes up, and announces something as good as these guys. Atleast Lane Assistant and TTS and iPod Controls would be nice

You can search for Points of Interest like a Walmarts in your area in Navigon but currently the search engine doesn't work very well. I found that narrowing it down by city works ok though.

Any stores built in the last year might or might not show up on Navigon's POIs but they probably will unless they are really really new on TomTom.

I think the easiest way is to search in google maps it's probably going to know more specific poi than navigon, and save it as a contact, then navigate to it in navigon.

Since the press release specifically relates to a Europe release, I wonder when US will get the 1.2.0 update.

Hopefully they change those ugly map colors and make the street names so that they can be read.

I just wish the UI was as clear as tomtom... Everything on it is TOO SMALL! You cant even read street names.

Well, when the 1.1 came out in Europe it came out for USA a couple of days later. It shouldn't be too long :)

    DONE Deal

This is the deciding factor for me. I am definitely going to get Navigon right now. Looking forward to it!

Now, if they would make it so you can preview your route by a list, that would be almost everything needed.

I have been itching to purchase Navigon. TTS is a huge deciding factor for me, but I will try and wait just a bit longer to see if there is any news regarding the TomTom car kit. More specifically, I'm interested in its compatibility with other GPS software.

Yep. I've been using Navigon for a couple of weeks and I've been thoroughly impressed. The addition of TTS will address my only major concern (other than the crappy POI search engine -- I use Maps/Contacts instead).

It is compatible. There was a front page article about it yesterday

I just wish for one change & one addition and the v1.2 update would be perfect for me....

Fix the text legibility issue while navigating. Either remove the white stroke on the text, change it to black, or just use a larger black bolded font. Any of these would fix the issue.

Add in a route overview page so that I can see the route beforehand.

The app does allow you to see the overall route, but without detail (i.e. street names) iirc. From the map screen, tap the map, then tap the icon in the lower rt-hand corner. You should get an overhead map view that includes both your start and end points.

I understand this. Pointless across the state of Texas, or long trips though.

There needs to be a list view.
