iPod Need for a screen protector? (3g nano)

I'm debating whether or not a screen protector is necessary. I know the screens on the first gens would scratched if you thought about touching them, but the ones on the 2nd gen were very durable. Where does the nano stand? Is a case really necessary? I'd rather not buy one if I don't have to, but I don't want the screen to look like trash in a week.
