    I've seen a lot of libs on FB smugly dismissing the Olympics because of the "overt nationalism." However, what would provoke celebrity science pundit Neil deGrasse Tyson to dump all over the United States because we are crushing it in the Olympics?

    The fact that that Micheal Phelps has more gold medals than most nations must drive Neil crazy.

    Incidentally, I only know this because I follow Jake Tapper who had a great retort.

    And 300x more things we're able to do. Freedom of choice, it's not a bad thing.

    Maybe he'll sign up to become a swimmer?

    As for nationalism, the scoffers probably overlook what other nations are doing to foreign made products, even if their own people make the "foreign" brands. Globalization is not a one way street, but while there've been good aspects there have been harmful ones as well, nor is correlation the likely source of causation.

    Plenty of experts in pesky sciency fields like biology say that not everybody has the best genes or endurance and how everybody has individual strengths and weaknesses in general. Surely Neil there would understand such a fact? But he deals with physics, not biology.

    Hell, if there are nurses that don't take care of their own health or don't know how some diseases get spread... again, individual strengths and weaknesses. It's a human thing.

    You're taking offense to a science joke about statistical adjustments?

    You either didn't get it, or are actually wrapped too tightly in your flag. ;)

    Seriously, this was worth a thread?

    Well, it's a chance to bash science and hipsters, even though the latter have nothing to do with the topic.

    Man, @aaronvan. Your time away from here has really softened the threads you create. I demand you bring back the old @aaronvan NOW!

    Seriously though I think the OP and the macho chest puffers in this thread need to lighten up. I've never heard of this guy but it's a funny tweet.

    USA = 83 medals
    HUN = 13 medals

    USA has 6.38 times as many medals as Hungary.

    USA team = *554 athletes
    HUN team = 160 athletes

    USA has 3.46 times as many athletes at the Olympics.

    So, we are doing pretty good on a per Capita basis. If you want to just count gold medals, we have 4.67 times as many so we are still doing pretty good.

    Neil likes to agitate the general public and is an attention hound. So, it's best to just ignore him or at least understand the motivation for his comments. I'm sure he understands the flaw in his comment - but he would not be one to let that get in the way of a good kerfuffle.

    *Some adjustment would also be made to account for the athletes that compete in team events. USA has more athletes in team events.

    His comment wasn't about athletes sent, but by population of the nations.

    The normalization by population is definitely good logic, but it does appear to be unnecessary anti-American sentiments.

    One of the best things about Mr. Tyson is that he ruffles right wing feathers so easily. It's a consequence of the anti-intellectualism that has overtaken them.

    That may very well be the case but Neil deGrasse Tyson is a complete jack ass in my book as well.

    More of a house hold name in America but for those even partially into science then odds are his name has come up at some point. He's a huge inspiration to kids getting in to science.

    You may or may not be interested but here are a few good clips of him, the first being my fav.

    Did you guys not get Cosmos? It was pretty big here and what probably introduced Tyson to everyone who didn't already know him.

    Nope, never heard of it either.

    Was it comedy? There's about 2 or 3 decent American comedies in existence, so we don't get many on TV here.

    I don't find Tyson to be smug and I don't feel he is being portrayed fairly in this thread because of one off tweet. Maybe spend some time researching the guy, listen to a few of his space talk (also comedy related) episodes, the guy is probably one of the most approachable scientists in astrophysics.

    His book the sky is not the limit is pretty good too if you haven't read it, I wish we had more scientists like this when I was younger, he is like Bill Nye with actual credentials.
