For ~1 month, 18% of all Macs ain't bad, but we can do better...

Don't get me wrong, I would not be happy if it stayed where it is now, but if you compare 10.6 to 10.5 or 10.4 adoption, it's pretty favorable.

The annoying thing to me is that certain (completely non-generalizable) statistics suggest that most 10.6 upgrades eat away at 10.5, but not 10.4 so much. (http://update.omnigroup.com, click on "Major Version") Tiger is still declining steadily, but as a developer I'd be quite happy if that number dropped to very near zero. With the exception of a diminishing population of PowerPC systems that don't meet the minimum requirements, nearly EVERYONE can run Leopard. I strongly recommend it, since Leopard is faster on the same hardware, and is such a huge step up from Tiger. I think it's time for a crusade... :)

If everyone who upgrades to Snow Leopard were to give/sell their now-unused copy of Leopard to a Tiger user, the world would be a better place. If you know a Tiger user, convince/help them to upgrade to Leopard. Make them an offer they can't refuse. Don't let your old Leopard disc become another coaster on your desk — donate it to a needy Mac user! :D I've been remiss — I have two brothers,0 my parents, and mother-in-law still on Tiger, and it's time for an upgrade to 10.5 minimum...

How about bringing Christmas in October? It may seem like a cheap present, but it's the thought that counts, and the recipient will thank you many times over. Plus you'll get good karma from Mac developers who will be able to drop support for 10.4 and use the latest and greatest APIs and technologies. Pretty please?

Give me a few months, and I will grow that number by 600 SL installs. My dept is undertaking an upgrade to SL and all new iMacs.

It will be nice to get rid of the OS9 machines some locations are currently using.

Ya, i think a large demographic own 10.6 but are waiting for 10.6.3 or there abouts.. 10.5.8 works great for me, so i'm waiting on software/driver vendors to update and make things 10.6 friendly before installing and fighting with bugs and incompatibility just so I can be on the bleeding edge. Things ain't broke now, and for the time being upgrading is only gonna potentially introduce that.

Why don't Apple just sell Leopard for $29? Or even the $8 disk and shipping costs? In fact why not make it available for free? Can I even buy a copy now?

It's on my to-do list... I personally thought it would have been a greater number, but im guessing since there aren't big changes there isn't a huge rush~

Waiting until HP figures out how to make my printer/scanner work with it, so I'll probably be on 10.5 forever.

In all honestly, a dual and quad-core G5 is for heavy lifting... and that is exactly what apple advertised them for... they weren't touting those monsters for Word, internet, etc... It's amusing that many people here (not necessarily you, but mostly newbies) defend apple for leaving customers in the dust but i dont think they realize that people paid a lot of cash for systems they had no idea would be forcibly obsolete within just a couple years.
The G5 Quads and Duals were for heaving lifting in 2005 (when they were first released) just like my dual 1ghz G4 was for heavy lifting in April '02 when I purchased it. But technology marches on, the intel machines smoke the G5's and it's not like Apple is the only company waving good-bye to the G5s. Want to work w/the RedOne camera? You need an intel. Want to run the latest version of Avid? You need an intel. Want to use the Cineform codec on a Mac? That's right, you need an intel. If one needs to always run the latest and greatest one has to update one's hardware more often. But does one always need to run the latest and greatest?

Sadly I'll probably buy Windows 7 before Snow Leopard due to the lack of support on Adobe's side of things. That and a handful of other programs that aren't yet supported on SL that I need for work/school.

I wan to upgrade though...

I don't get it. CS4 works perfectly fine on my SL computer.....

I hate to ask this but does anyone regret upgrading to Snow Leopard? I feel like I'm out $29 on an operating system I can't use, yet.

I am somewhat. Nothing extremely bad but this really doesn't feel like an "upgrade."

PS id say 18% this fast is pretty impressive!

Of those 18%, how many have rolled back to 10.5? I did.

Me too.
Snow Leopard was a total disaster for me. Spreadsheets fell apart, quicktime wasn't compatible with third party software, EyeTV completely failed, and on and on...

Yep. I'm also out two days of futzing around with it before pulling the plug and going back. I've never had to go back with any of Apple's software before.

Windows 7 is going to sell like pancakes. Actually it has and it is already selling a lot.

Do new computers come with SL? If Apple lowers the price imac or mac mini as they have done with the macbooks and ipod touch this year, I'll be getting my first mac.

feels like an upgrade to me :)

Yes new macs ship with snow leopard

I've upgraded, and the system does feel faster but it's not rock solid just yet, I also recommend 4GB of RAM regardless, still SL was only $30 and I'm happy with it.

I don't like anything Adobe-bad programs, except for ps and a few others out the dozens that they publish.

Can't wait for full blown QtX though...

you would like to think this study removes machines that have no possibility of upgrading (non-intel boxes) or else these numbers will be skewed. I have to admit, at that price point, i expected to see more first adopters.

Apple, just buy them up with some of that stockpile of cash...please. Then at least we'll get updates to make sure our software works with the OS.

Adobe market cap: 16.92B
Apple Cash and Short Term Investments: 24.22B

Sorry, not gonna happen :p

Um...can I come work for your department/company?

I'm waiting for iLife/iWork '10

Or X or whatever they're going to call it - if I must buy iLife and iWork with Snow Leopard, then I sure am not going to be buying '09 versions this late in the year! That and no installs before 10.6.3 or so is on the disc.

Windows 7 was an easy purchase as it has had extensive testing already and already has patches available - looking good so far. In terms of new OS, the next 6 months will see me upgrade twice. I have decided against buying new hardware - this MacBook has plenty of life in it yet, even the battery is doing well at 3hrs batter life and 785 cycles...

With regards to the figures, it is interesting that they pop up at the weekends - is there any data on the popularity of Mac OS X at home compared to at work?

While I was waiting for 10.5.3 or so...

... I heard rumours about something called Snow Leopard. With a name like that, I came to the conclusion (rightly or wrongly) that Snow Leopard was an admission that something was wrong with Leopard and decided to ignore it.

10.6 has a key feature - full exchange support - and has started to remove support for older systems, which is enough reason to go for it. Unlike in the PC world, where every machine I have bought has done at least 5 (and in one case nearly 9) years, it seems Apple are going for forced obsolescence in as little as 18 months. I might not be able to run 10.7

Don't get me wrong, I would not be happy if it stayed where it is now, but if you compare 10.6 to 10.5 or 10.4 adoption, it's pretty favorable.

No worries - I think most of us Tiger users will be on 10.6 soon enough, unless we're PowerPC (I'm not)

Actually, according to the same site, Vista currently has 18.6% of total market share (about 20% of Windows):
marketshare.hitslink.com

Judging from the response to the W7 beta, I'd guess that'll do much better.

I am very happy with 10.6. Feels like a full point release to me. No problems installing, faster, Xcode 3.2 is nice (also spaces works well with Matlab now).

i doubt MS expects to sell much upgrades. most sales are OEM licenses bought with a new computer. come october when Windows 7 ships you will be able to get a new PC for less than the retail price of Windows 7 Ultimate.

same thing with upgrades. why upgrade when PC's are so cheap now for a lot of power
