Since the graphical element is only one of the changes coming, it makes sense they would test the navigation level since that incorporates the major elements Apple is changing.

Gives me hope that the changes will be coming out faster and more widespread.

You missed my point of posting yesterday - I chimed in several posts earlier that the additional detail is showing up in the macOS app, adding later that it's not in the iOS app yet.

As to the "wandering" of GPS, yes it has annoyed me over the past several weeks but an experience today left me wondering somewhat. I was out in my older Benz today and used its clunky nav to get to a location in its memory - and I'm just spitballing here - the COMAND unit was locked onto 8 satellites (it shows in the display) and the nav was acting just as my iPhone has been, as if it were dozens of feet behind my actual position or not on the roadway. Turns were announced after I'd made the turn, distances were off by dozens of feet, at intersections my position was "floating" - all with a clear line-of-sight. I took my GF's Porsche out, a fairly new Macan, and got the same positioning issues while locked onto 7-8 satellites. Then, I broke out my surveying total station - which uses the E5 GPS frequencies, generally good to around 30cm on a bad day, and I couldn't get a lock. None of those units use a cellular network - satellite only. Something's up, seeing what you offer as "wandering" as well - and GPS.gov is in shutdown mode, of course. I've got to survey a site next week, time to break out the hub and oil the chain... /rant

    Government shutdown related perhaps?

Possibly. A few months back, Google Maps (including on CarPlay) suddenly looked different, but then reverted back a day later. Then the update officially rolled out a few weeks ago.

It looks like Southern California was updated with the new Apple Maps?

Apparently, it is location/user specific. Not updated for everyone for some reason.

    Latest public beta here...

It looks like you may be right and Apple may be rolling it out. I have it also on my iPhone. However I don't on macOS or even my iPad. Strange it is on my iPhone and NOT my iPad.

You are in Atlanta? What phone/software?? Just curious.

Developer beta? Public beta? standard OS?

Missed the MacOS reference. My bad. :(

Went to McD's today and splurged on a couple of SEM's .... While there I pulled up AMaps and watched the location float all around my location. I pulled up GMaps and it was pretty much rock steady with minor movement. Same phone. Same hardware.

Took AMaps out for a spin and it did pretty well giving directions.

Strange my iPhone has it but my iPad does only in satellite view.

I think Google Maps has an algorithm that will "snap" you to the nearest road if it can deduce more or less if you're on a road. I've seen this happen during navigation, where you might be on a side road but Google Maps will still show you on the other road until you move far enough away.

That might explain what you saw.

Maybe but I was sitting in a McDonald's and that is where it put me. In the building. AMaps had me wandering around the parking lot.

    I'm stumped.

Since the Apple Maps update I have been playing around with it seeing what has improved other than the appearance.
It still has issues. Here is a great example:
Trip from my house to the Bob Hope Airport from Ventura.
    • Apple Maps gave me a choice of three routes. Traffic looked good. It only took me to the entrance to the airport. That was my only option unless I specifically asked for Main Terminal, Parking A, Parking B, etc. Apple Maps did not know what some of the airport locations were. I could drill down on the map and select specific destinations so the info is there. Somewhere.
    • Google Maps gave me a choice of four routes. Traffic looked good. When it pulled up the airport it asked for clarification on my destination. It not only had all the airport locations and parking, but had a link ability that would connect to my flight status.
End of the day Apple Maps is getting better.
For me it still falls short. Remember I am running this on an iPhone 8+.

I'm still not seeing the rest of the California update on my iPhone Xs Max on the latest iOS.

And yeah, it's a shame that Apple Maps typically only gives you three options. I'd at least like them to throw in one toll-free option, without having to select "avoid tolls".

They do it the other way around, though. With “avoid tolls” enabled, Apple Maps will also offer you the tolled option, labelling that as the “fastest” and putting a relevant currency sign next to it.

Hey everyone. The New York City area got some more updates yesterday, just as it was announced that Apple had quietly released some minor updates nationwide.

On the regular map (while not driving), many more shopping centers and parking lots now show the individual parking lanes, as well as entrances and exits. Apple also greatly expanded the numbers of airports and shopping malls that you can now see detailed interior maps of. Colors and overall appearance on the map (especially during the day) have been improved somewhat. Directions have some slight alterations as well from my own personal commutes, and an audio glitch that was sometimes cutting off the start of a new direction is nowhere to be found.

Over here in Manhattan and immediate surroundings (central and western Bronx, western Queens, downtown Brooklyn), the navigation map mode got a major face lift. Just as with the new maps in northern California, we now have full details inside parks, and a lot more greenery all around. Again, for New York City at least, this is currently ONLY while in navigation mode. It seems they're hiding little updates in this mode for now.

On the regular map on my iPhone, only northern California still has the new map. But it seems I can preview some areas by sneaking into navigation mode.

Despite the new additions of the greenery, ball fields, etc, I don't believe any new road or building data has been implemented yet. Perhaps that is still to come.

NYC was actually the next thing I looked at, but it doesn’t seem to look “new” to me...it does have a TON of 3D buildings in map mode...but not sure if they weren’t there before.

I rarely get out of Manhattan other then a ride to LaGuardia.

Heading there Monday for 4 days and commuting over to NJ one day. Will see if I notice anything.

Edit: I would say no...look at detail below in Central Park. These ball fields don’t even show up at any detail level for me.

Thanks! I wanted to hear your thoughts because of the way you checked out the new detail when you went to San Fran a few months back. You’re in the perfect position to judge.

It does seem possible though that new detail may be showing up for some and not others. So I’m not discounting the other poster’s impressions, esp since a lot of the changes he/she noted were in nav mode. You should turn that during your cab ride in.
