Well, I finally decided to place my order for the 27 inch i7 iMac...

now it's time to get RAM. I'm going to be using Logic 9 extensively (also some C4D animation) on this thing so I'm probably going to need more than 4gb of RAM to get the most out of it.

Where can I get some really good RAM deals right now? And why is the ram for the iMac "laptop memory"??

+1 for Macsales. Great Prices on OWC with lifetime warranty.

as far as why laptop memory. My guess would be the size. the access door panel to support 4 desktop slots would be much larger and would probably impact the depth of the iMac as well.

Is there a performance difference between laptop memory and memory for desktops?

    !

Yes. Desktop memory won't fit in the current iMacs - all iMacs have used laptop memory for the past several years.

My current iMac i7 is set up with 16 gigs and runs Logic great, no problems.

All the iMac's use SODIMMM size which usually is used for smaller footprint devices like notebooks. Speed-wise there's no difference with larger sticks.

However, there's two speeds of Mac compatible memory so be careful to get the right ones (which have already been listed). It's best to get the newer PC3-10600 for the 2010-2011 iMac's.
