A study by independent consultants (commissioned by the Chicago Tribune) examining Chicago's red light cameras found that, controlling for external factors, intersections with red light cameras saw an insignificant (less than 5%) increase in injury accidents. The study found that while "T-Bone" style accidents decreased by 15%, rear-end accidents that caused injuries increased by 22%. This study only looked at injury accidents and not fender benders.

You can read the study (PDF) here.

I'm curious ... were the cameras intended to reduce accidents?

I thought people who were against red light cameras were saying that there was an increase in accidents since people would slam on their brakes the second the lights would turn yellow.

Red light cameras are nothing more than revenue generators.

This is the justification from the cities that install them, as red light camera critics see them as nothing more than a money grab.

The best way to deal with bad intersections is by installing round-abouts. Not only do they eliminate the worst kind of collision vectors, they can also result in huge reductions in fuel consumption, and thereby, smog.

Yes. The justification for these cameras is always safety... and now we know that is garbage fed to us from big brother.

Looks like I don't sound so much like a cranky old man anymore.:D

The last of the red light cameras were just retired in NJ last week. No more of that nonsense here.

There's a traffic circle near me that has a major accident at least once a month.
While they do work in principle, people that are unfamiliar with how they work may lower the efficiency of said solution.

Yeah, over here in Europe the roundabout is king.

Mythbusters did an episode on it and it's superior in every way except that a roundabout is a little bit bigger than a regular crossing.

Thing is once people get used to them they are so much better. We should add them here and get people used to them. Honestly I love them as it is so much faster to get threw them than dealing with stop lights.

I agree with others that red light camera are nothing more than a money grab. Big time when you find cities lower yellow light times on red light camera intersection

I don't think roundabouts are authoritarian enough for the US mindset.

If you want to make people cautious, then take away all the signs, stop lights etc. Under conditions of ambiguity and uncertainty people slow down and pay more attention. This has been demonstrated in several European cities.

Income first! safety second. To make a difference from the beginning, there needs to be a big warning sign. The places around me have no such signs leading me to believe they are primarily income generators. Yes I have been bitten, and now know where they are.

No, I suspect it has to do with the influence of oil companies. Roundabouts reduce fuel consumption, traffic lights help keep their product more profitable.

They're unfortunately uncommon here, even though they can be a sensible option.

Cameras here in NW Ohio will be removed also, I'm not sure if it's all over Ohio though. It's about time...these things seemed to provide no help in decreasing traffic violations.
