The current wallpaper selection in iOS is the worst it’s ever been. The default wallpapers have been awful for a few years of iOS updates. Many of the default wallpapers just don’t suit the home screen IMO (like the explosions/bursts of colour they added, or the entire planets on a black background).

I hope Apple introduces a whole new set of wallpapers for users in iOS 11 GM, ready for the new iPhone marketing materials. Some beautiful landscapes, awesome abstract minimalist type ones and some new space/galaxy type images. Be nice to get around 12 new stills AND new dynamic/live wallpapers (which haven’t been touched since iOS 7!) Imagine beautiful bokeh-type live wallpapers that look a lot less sh*t than the garish colours and cheap looking dynamic wallpapers we’ve had for years.

Furthermore, new sounds would freshen things up as well. New ringtones, text tones and other system sounds for a new era.

Here’s a list of the wallpapers Apple added in the iOS 7 GM: https://www.cultofmac.com/244776/here-are-all-the-new-wallpapers-in-ios-7-gallery/ Some of these are beautiful - yet they removed them?! The current tiny selection of wallpapers are nearly all not as good as what they used to have available.

So they have done it before, adding new wallpapers to a GM. Here’s hoping they do it again.

Apple used to pay attention to these small details, but they haven’t in recent years which is a shame. I hope there’s a surprise in the GM build.

With the plethora of wallpapers available via the web etc why the fuss over what Apple includes or doesnt? Even without getting one from the web a lot of folk will use photos they've taken themselves.
Correct, but every OS has to have it’s own “official” wallpapers.

Obviously.

I used to use the stock wallpapers from iOS 7 backwards. Then they drastically changed the quality and choice of wallpapers, and removed old ones that were really nice.

It used to be that the official ones were beautiful and worked with homescreen layouts nicely, not any more.

It’s a lack of effort on Apple’s part and a break with tradition. Same has happened on the Mac too - there used to be stunning new ones added regularly but they’ve just given up now. It’s a minor thing and of course there are millions of wallpapers online or the choice to use your own pictures, but that has always been the case.

Agree iOS 7 had the best wallpaper selection, but I just love all the aquatic "default" wallpapers we've seen since iOS 4, with iOS 8 (betas) having the most beautiful one. They should return these as a homage to 10 years of iOS or whatever. :D

These were great. Not too busy so they worked with icons on top of them.

The more recent efforts have been very ‘busy’ and made app names / the time hard to read in places.

Such a shame Apple have moved away from this.

Really angered me they removed all the space wallpapers they used to have like this one

Here's the larger iPad resolution copy of that one btw. I ended up downloading it to my photos so I could set it as my wallpapers after it got removed from the iOS 11 beta.

what is hard about using any wallpaper off the internet? and if apple kept every wallpaper since ios 4 or something then we'd have another type of complaining: "omfg apple so many wallpapers taking up gigabytes upon gigabytes of storage on the smallest devices"

cant win here..

With AMOLED displays... black is the most power efficient state, unlike with the old IPS.

They'll be pushing mostly black wallpapers like are in there now.

I agree that the entire planets with the black background don‘t look very good. Especially on LCDs. The explosion ones just have way too much black. I used one from macOS and cut it and I think it looks really good, especially with the blur.

For the past couple of weeks I’ve been using the iOS 8 wallpaper and it’s great

I wish apple would provide more of the dynamic wallpapers and live wallpapers. I can find just about whatever as a still image to set, but it's harder for those. Though right now my background is just solid black. I like it because it reminds me of how simple the home screen was on the original iPhone.

There are apps that have Live Wallpapers you can download and set

They won’t be hand picked by Apple, but you might find something you really like

Why I like apples wallpapers (currently using something from web) is because they are of high quality. And anything that isn't the default wallpapers on the plus models looks terrible in landscape when on the home screen. The wallpapers don't rotate correctly and get zoomed instead.

This.

Using a custom wallpaper on Plus sized models in landscape mode crop the image and make it awful even if it's an official wallpaper from an old iOS that used to work fine in landscape when it was built in by default. And yes I tried with a wallpaper extracted directly from iOS via jailbreaking and it still look awful.

Oddly enough, wallpapers rotate properly on the iPad in landscape.

The Wallpapers don‘t get cropped and zoomed anymore in iOS 11. I‘m using a square Wallpaper and it works fine!

That's great news. I'm buying the iPhone 8 though so I might lose landscape homescreen. Oh well. At least it might look better on landscape Notification Center.
