I had to post this to discuss. What I read was pretty ridiculous...

Staples struggles, but CEO’s pay surges
225 stores closing, and online market strategy is a challenge, but top brass are well rewarded

Used to work for staples, they treat their retail employees like dirt.

According to the article this guy has been CEO for 13 years. He had adequate time to see plan for these problems.

Staples is a victim of Amazon-ation. On top of which, Staples starting selling their own brand of merchandise having edged out the brand names that helped them get on top for a while. Staples brand sucks. Fourth, EXPENSIVE. Fifth and final - they synthesized into that same bouillabaisse that is CVS, Target, Walgreens - essentially all of them selling similar stuff and gone off the rails of what it was that made them unique. Dare I say Sixth - Screw 'em. For all the mom and pop's businesses that Staples destroyed. One of my only misgivings of Mitt Romney, who's firm I understand had something to do with Staple's creation.

This is what is wrong in corporate America! The "Golden Parachute" mentality that started all this wage gap in today's business.

I remember the days when I used to work in the Staples Copy Center and the regional manager used to come by every so often just to grill me on how to upsell a customer who wants simple b/w flyers to color copies that they don't need or want. He was such an effing douche bag about it too. If you want me to upsell your overpriced products or services, pay me some damn commission or some type of an incentive to upsell. They also used to have meetings just to bitch to us about their sales numbers dropping, as if it was our fault and as if we give a crap. Pay me crap, get crap out of me. Glad those days are over.

The problem is that these companies are still living in the 1980's with their business model.

Staples sucks. The only time I go in there is:

    1) To look at a product in person before I buy it on Amazon, or
    2) To return an Amazon purchase at their shipping counter.

When it comes business regulation, the management class scream 'It will hurt profits! Think of the shareholders!'. When it comes to managerial pay, however, ... ;)

It's like if the captain of the Titanic went and said "**** you, this lifeboat is mine.".
