The connection between our countries and Saudi Arabia is disturbing. It's not a country that I admire too much.

Or into any radical religious group, for that matter.

The worst part of it is, her punishment won't be a simple fine, these barbarians will probably behead her.

Another fine example of what the western world faces, another fine example of what a society based on a backward religion can become. Islam is what it is.

Please. In many islamic countries (like Iran) women can not only drive, get an education work etc... they are treated with immense respect. The Saudi men seem rather insecure when it comes to their wives, fearing cheating etc.. so they force all these things on the women in the name of Islam (convenient way to get them to follow). Do you believe anywhere in Islam they forbid women to drive? Driving wasnt even invented back then! The Saudis have also banned protesting in the name of Islam! Retardism.

This is a perfect example of using religion as an excuse to keep people in line based on the political motives of the government.

Western women, in "compounds", are allowed to drive, in the compounds.

If this is what the Koran teaches, there seems to be no place for it in the modern World.

Or any gender, for that matter.

Any religion or society is capable of such depravity. Christianity, for example, has held women as inferior to men for thousands of years. To blame this solely on Islam is prejudiced.

The sins of the past need not be repeated in the future.

    Is that your best defence????

Who said anything about the past? Are you suggesting that there are no longer any Christians who still believe, and treat, women completely inferior to men?

Not at all. I know they still exist, especially in Europe.

But does this give licence to Islam to continue on this arcane course???

This isn't about Islam; this is about Saudi Arabia.

This is indeed deserving of much criticism, but that criticism needs to be directed at the Saudi Arabia people, not their religion.

Do we blame the Holocaust on Hitler, Germany's leader during that period, or the cardinal religion of Germany, Christianity?

Religion is an excuse, not a cause.

    Wrong.

For their religion is their raison d'Etra. Why do you ignore this fact??

You do realize that only ~20% of the est. 1.8 billion muslims on the planet live in arab countries right? And that only around 1.5% of the total global muslim population is in Saudi Arabia?

I find it funny how people seem to think Islam is this completely different, completely barbaric religion compared to christianity, when they are both very similar. Calling one barbaric means the other is 99% barbaric, which would lead you to conclude all religion is barbaric.

Turkey has a 99% muslim population. What is your point?

You love jumping on these and making up general remarks don't ya? Have you heard of ANY other country that does this? There is a reason for that, it is a Saudi cultural thing, not an Islamic thing.

    What he said!

Luckily it is not what it teaches.

Saudi is a very interesting country of many contradictions.

Because culture impacts religion and transforms it beyond what it is. There is a reason every country has differing traditions when it comes to doing anything. Some people realize it is cultural, and some people (some locals and ill informed outsiders like this forum) think that it must be written in Scripture.

Why do you ignore the fact that not all muslim nations are the same?

I'm sure Indonesian women aren't being prevented from driving.

This is the byproduct of Saudia Arabia's need to fully control every aspect of its population. Misogyny, sadly, is an effective way of maintaining a strict social order that lets the government get away with essentially anything it wants.

That is, before it runs out of oil. ;)
