Or, it could be that there is more to each case than we have presented. Especially with the lesbian - that news story is incredibly short. Both pled, so I imagine that recommended sentencing was presented by respective DAs.

To say that there was no justice really seems forced.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but I think the gender of the students involved might be worth considering. It seems that whenever there's a male teacher-female student situation the teacher is (quite rightly) vilified for taking advantage of his student, whereas when it's a male student who's the victim of a predatory female teacher it seems to be taken less seriously, what with it being every schoolboy's fantasy and everything... With this case involving a female student this differing attitude might explain things a bit.

And while I'm no expert on US law or anything, could the fact that the teacher caught with the male student entered a plea deal also explain the apparent leniency?

I am reading all of this for the first time. It would appear that (as in most cases), the extenuating circumstances are different. But, say for a minute they were not, and the only difference was one was a same-sex relationship. I think in FL, that alone would rate a stiffer sentence. Most of the state is pretty conservative.
