No new M3 Mac Studio. No new adult size iMac…. for YEARS.

I have never experienced so many problems with trying to buy an appropriately updated Apple Desktop
in 35 years.

I finally decide to trash my ancient iMac and buy a new desktop but seems Apple is incapable of launching new models on a semi yearly or even 3-4 year basis.

What gives?

I guess Apple decided that all the real money was in laptops and mobile devices? I'm pretty unhappy too, since I'd like to buy an iMac with at least 32 GB of RAM, but that's not happening anytime soon.

Very few people buy mac studios these days, im waiting out for a M4 Max one so i can just have one for the house, the whole idea of M series chip was efficiency and low power usage yet delivering high performance which is why i feel the macbooks and phones took off way more as most people want to be mobile

Sadly, we've just got to 'deal with it'. I was in the same position with my 2014 i7 iMac that I pushed the button on an M1 Max in December '22. June 2023 - M2 was released. I'm just glad it never incurred the same fan issues as previous 2022 models have experienced. Would love to have had the option of 96gb memory though

I just think that people upgrade desktop machines way less often than mobile ones. The latter become thinner, lighter, and the battery wears out over a few years, and gets hit by busses etc. Desktops on the other hand will continue to work, short of lack of OS updates - Which also affect laptops. Thus, it just becomes a bigger market, especially when modern people often don't want a desktop standing out all the time.

Personally I am awaiting an M4 Max Studio.

Apple wants to move away from M3 family. My guess is M4 family Mac mini, MBP and Mac Studio will be coming by the end of the year.

Not sure if you're aware, but a current Apple laptop is as good as any desktop. Just close the lid and plug it in to the desk hub. This is what I do. Bonus is that you can take it with you if needed. Laptop-as-desktop is greatly preferable to waiting around for Apple to update desktops.

No, but it's perceived as old by (some) people because Apple has introduced 2 newer chips with iterated names since then. Regardless of whether those newer chips are actually better than M2 in any meaningful way, (some) people think the chip must be old and out of date. I've seen people say they're hesitant to buy Vision Pro because it "only" has M2. Lmao.

Well I’ve just purchased a Mac Pro M2 at 15% off from the refurbished store and so far I’m not disappointed!

If you need a new Mac desktop, I'd go for a refurbished or signficantly discounted new M2 Max or Ultra Mac Studio.

What's wrong with buying an M2 Max/Ultra Mac Studio (Refurb'ed if you really can't bring yourself to buy an M2 Max/Ultra when M3 Max exists) and a Studio display? That's basically a modern 27" iMac except you can keep the display when the computer inevitably becomes outdated or breaks.

I mean laptops overtook desktops in general long ago and I think COV19 + the continued rise of cloud computing became an extinction level event with a long tail with effects still being felt for desktops on the corp side at least.

I’m a software engineer and I dont need the absolute beefiest machine possible at my desk because my truly heavy lifting is either done on on premise systems in our dc or on aws anyway, and a laptop means I can work anywhere and dock to bigger screens/keyboards/etc as needed. Now to be fair I worked like that long before COV19, but that pattern has just become more common, and even easier to implement for folks that dont *have* heavy lifting.

Laptops are powerful enough now for most work, and it’s easier and cheaper for most folks to have a portable/stowable work machine

There’s still plenty of market for desktops, but it’s getting smaller and to some extent more boutique

That’s not the entire picture though

You have to worry about the battery dying out in time or the screen failing with a MacBook or any other intricate component .

Desktop Macs are far more robust , which will last you many more years with far lesser to worry about

That’s the problem. Unacceptable to buy something that may get replaced with something that is 50% faster any day now. They don’t update the design of their desktops. There is no excuse for them to wait it out, apart from getting rid of left over M2 stock.

I think it’s part of the younger group growing up. Those in high school and college now are used to doing school work on smaller devices. So not ALL but many and Apple is putting their resources towards what will make money. What’s wrong with an M2 Max or Ultra Mac Studio? Buy one refurbished or used with an AppleCare+ plan.

it’s terrible that Apple’s silicon team iterates so fast. I wish they’d slow down so I never have to worry about FOMO.

Remember the good old days of Skylake? 5 or so generations using the same architecture. Total bliss! Can’t experience FOMO if there’s no progress.

I don't think I'm going out on a limb too far here to suggest that the M4 Ultra is going to be more than a small percentage improvement over the M2 Ultra. Evidence doesn't point that way right now.

The Studio is lagging 2 generations behind, currently using the M2 chip. The M3 Max meets or exceeds M2 Ultra performance in several metrics, even with the thermal constraints of a laptop body. And M4 is somewhat more powerful than M3. Then we're throwing two M4 Maxes together to make the M4 Ultra. Seems like there's room for a substantial increase there.
