Wasted so much time on waiting and waiting for over 2.5 years but nothing good comes out from Apple. The MBP2018 has thermal issues and it is not 100% certain that Rev 3 keyboard has no issue after few months of use. What suggestion do you have if I need to buy a laptop this month?

Wasted ? The 2018 are even better and aren’t that bad with maybe the exception of the i9 15 inch model. A base 15 inch will work fine

Didn't users mention that even the base model of 13" and 15" have issues but just not as bad as the one with i9?

I have to disagree, I think the 2018 machine is a fantastic machine, and I think the heating issue can be largely mitigated by more aggressive fan settings.

You have options, if you don't want a Mac for what ever reason, there's a plethora of PC makers that offer a wide variety of computers, from thin and light, to large and powerful.

This is true.

I am somehow on the verge of just waiting it out - not to any spite to Apple, but I am not convinced that I am getting bang for buck with Coffeelake (so this includes Windows competitors, so switching manufacturers doesn't really solve things).

2019/2020+ might just be a much much better year (relative to 2014->2018 updates) for laptops across the industry (in both CPU and GPU). I say "might", don't want to have egg on my face in a couple of years :).

Mitigated but I think in the end not enough. I9 is just producing way to much heat. Needs to use a different body thicker and better thermal paste among other things

For the i9 yes, I'm rocking with the i7 and I'm very pleased with what's thermal control once I spin up the fans a bit faster

For the i7 it’s fine but I’m talking specifically about the i9. Just doesn’t work in the current body . Look at windows laptops which have the i9 thicker and better solution solving the heat issue

Similar to the whole Red ring of death issue with the Xbox 360. For those who don’t know basically heat ruined the system. Gotten hot enough to cook eggs on it.

I am enjoying my MacBook Pro. If it works for you -- go for it. I am commenting from a Parallels Windows 10 VM with 12GB of RAM allocated to it on my LG 5K display. I forgot that I am working under a virtual environment. It is super fast. I am using Visual Studio 2017 and SQL Server here. Then I just flip over a desktop and can work on my Clojure project under macOS or open up XCode and work on an iPhone app.

It works great for my use case. If you are a video editor doing large renders, then maybe another option is better. But my base i7 is a champ so far. Yes, the machine gets really hot on my lap and the fans take forever to kick in and when they do they are louder than my Surface Book 2s. But this thing is way more powerful (except for GPU) for my use cases.

So the answer to your question is "it depends". For me, I'm pretty happy so far (but this is only Day #3).

Did you need a new Mac during that time? if yes jokes on you for keep waiting to see whats next in hope for something better. if no, be happy that you can buy a new Mac now.

If I was not in dire need of a MBP 3 months ago I would have bought this refresh. If you need a 15" go for the i7, we still need to see how bad the 2.6GHz throttles, what do you the machine for?

As for the GPU the the difference is not that big as the both have 4GB of VRAM which for most people have been the important thing. so again here what you intend to do will determine if you need the little speed bonus the 560X provides

I got the base 15" with 512GB and I'm very happy with the build quality. The keyboard does take some adjustment, if I had my druthers, I'd want a scissor's mechanism, but it is what it is.

I need to decide if I want to put windows on via bootcamp of vmware, I'm not sure, but I think I'll try vmware first. By the end day I should have a better feel about the thermals.

Do you use an external drive to store extra stuffs? Do you use Bootcamp as well?

There are two 1TB in my MBP 2010. One 1TB for Linux and one 1TB is shared between Mac OS and Windows. 512MB may be too small for me.

I disagree with the OP. I think the 2018 are fantastic machines. I would get one if I needed one. Fingers crossed but mine overall still runs strong. Right now is under repair as the battery was expanding. I hope to get another 2-3 years out of it after I get it back from service.

Yes the i9 seems to have some issue under heavy load but I would get the entry 15” with 2TB and 16GB.

I got the base 2017 13" nTB MBP.

Still think its the best value in the lineup with no refresh in sight due to no availability of the 15w Coffe lake chips. As a matter of fact i think Apple will kill it and have the Pro line start at $1799. This will be the last chance to get the pro features (screen quality, speakers, power) at the $1299 entry level.

If you do really need a laptop in one month and you feel that you are "wasting" your time waiting, the suggestion is to buy one and spend your time using it.

The MBP (or whatever) "Perfect Edition" will never come out. Every laptop in the world is a compromise and Apple's direction with the design of the MBP is clear, the advantages and drawbacks alike are known and if that's not your cup of tea just look elsewhere. Good alternatives exist, but laptops completely free of problems don't.

As for the thermal issues, I think you are overthinking it, really. They are probably serious enough on the i9, but the base 2.2 i7 will run just fine.

Actually the “Perfect Edition” is the rMBP 15” 2014 workplace bought for me. After that, the Dark Age of MBP started.

LOL! I love threads like this. I am enjoying my new MBPro.

My suggestion is for you to look at Gateway computers.

If you are going to be using software that maxes out your CPU you really need a desktop!

Need to bring back the "vote down" button for this.

As far as the models released to this day are concerned, yes, I agree that the 2013-2014 rMBPs were among the best for their time. For the defunct 17", it would have been the 2011... if RadeonGate didn't happen. However those form factors are not going to return and the MBP is currently what it is.

My point was, if you don't like at all the direction where the Mac is headed, which is understandable, it might be worth coming to grips with the idea that it's not the machine for you and avoid building up this endless expectation --> frustration cycle.

Kodos,

Which config did you go with? This is exactly the use case I will be using my new Macbook Pro for. I am coming from an early 2013 16GB/i7 and it is dog slow on compiles (I believe it's a combination of thermal, disk, etc..).

Are you running that VM on a 16GB config or 32GB ?

Thanks in advance!

No - we need to bring back the vote down for this: "If you are going to be using software that maxes out your CPU you really need a desktop!"

Good question @hajime. I'm currently wavering between a MBP 13" or a Dell XPS 15 + ubuntu. Changing my mind day by day honestly
