The RTX 5090 widens the flagship gap and appears to be primarily targeted at the ML/AI enthusiasts, including DLSS/FG fans.

The RTX 5080 has a decent FE MSRP. However, on paper, its overall raw performance falls short of the RTX 4090. Perhaps one of the reasons Nvidia wasn’t willing to try the $1,500 price point out of the gate.

Speaking of the Founders Edition… I am a fan of the 30 and 40 series FE design. And I was happy to see many third-party companies adopt the half pass-through cooling. The 50 series FE minimizes the design even further and shrinks the size back to a 2-slot bulk. Actually, the visual appears as a small nod to the 20 series — maybe purely coincidence. One of the questions is: has Nvidia really conquered physics, reducing the cooler size while increasing the power consumption (i.e., 5090 is up to a possible 600w TBP)?

Anyway… I won’t deny that I’m tempted by the 5080 FE. :)

Yea I think I am officially out of the rat race with PC gaming. I am still rocking a 1080ti and can play all the games I want no problem on my 4K tv. I have wanted to upgrade for years but these prices are just insane and getting worse. There is no way I am paying that kind of a money for a new GPU, and all this upscaling tech can **** right off. I am only interested in RAW performance, not stupid AI upscaling tech. At this point, what is even the point of spending that kind of money for a newer GPU when all the games target consoles anyway and just release unoptimized and rely on AI upscaling?

Yeah… Give me an extremely solid 60 (or up to 120) frame rate and genuinely stunning graphics, no predictive frame generation or upscaling.

Edit: I toned it down.

I found Jensen Huang's comment of a 5070 being as fast as a 4090 to be disingenuous. I think for the price, the 5070 is a great option, but to make such a BS claim like that is silly. I also think if it wasn't for the success of Intel's latest generate GPUs we probably wouldn't be seeing this price cut - competition at its best.

Yeah I think I am going to go for the 5080FE even though I am going to water cool it. I suspect the AIB models will be $1100+.

They are purely comparing the 5070 to the 4090 using MFG. It is slimy, but they aren't wrong when you are able to do so.

I'm really curious how much better these Visual Transforms models are compared to the CNN. I also noticed all the screen grabs were showing DLSS Performance, which is wild spending so much money to render at 1080p and upscale from there, 😂

Jenson didn't say that, he stated that the performance of the 5070 is comparable to the 4090 point blank - no qualifiers (at last I didn't hear)

Yeah just sticking with my 4060 until the wheels fall off haha.

I think my 4070 will be the last graphics card I buy - once my rig is obsolete my days of having a big honking desktop will be over. I feel like that paradigm is dying for all but the most hardcore of gamers.

Agreed. If you want the AI goodness then just get the 5070s. It’s just as good as a 4090 right? Chuckle.

Based on the information given I'd just assume they were including upscaling because the raw performance hasn't been upped that much (clearly). Maybe I am the only one to think that.

It’s the normal allusion/exaggeration that is marketing but, to be fair, Nvidia is reasonably playing their audience: FPS chasers. It’s also clearly a successful approach for monitor manufacturers.

Slowly working on a new build this year, I am glad I held off on purchasing at 4070 ti super and made the decision to actually do a little research before a big purchase :p I am moving from a 2070 so should see some very significant improvements going with a 5070 ti or 5080, depending on availability.

It's upscaling/frame gen. The new DLSS frame gen creates 3 frames for every 1 frame.

You would think AMD would have the advantage since all the consoles (except switch) use RDNA tech.

I think the 4070/ti was the sweet spot for the 40 series, such as (the real start of the experimentation in how far they can push pricing) it was.

But I don't think it's over. It's just that the 40 series was kinda ill-realized.

I have a few 4070's, along with 4080's and 90's. And I found the 90 the most disappointing actually in terms of my expectations in terms of 4K gaming. I have no plans for the 5090, or in fact, 50anything - and will see how the 60/70 midrange and upper midrange shapes up.

There's a lot of hype around new product so you need to tame your expectations. Baseline native performance without downscaling and fake frames is about +27.5% for the 5090 over the 4090. Unless you really need 32GB VRAM for AI/ML, 5070ti seems to be the sweet spot then 5080. Still also waiting for AMD 9070XT reveal to see where it stacks up.

I'm looking at the 5090 to upgrade over my 4090 for my Mac Pro 7,1. But we'll see what availability is like at launch...

I really like my 4070 - it does anything I ask of it at 1440p and doesn't sound like a jet engine (I get enough of that at work!) as I do it. Which I guess means I'm not pushing it hard enough - time to get that 240Hz monitor I've been eyeballing. ;)

When I say that I'm over it, I just mean that in a few years when my 4070 is showing its age, I think laptops and small form PCs will be performant enough graphically that I won't be itching to build another large desktop. Nvidia (or AMD, etc) will still be getting my money, but their hardware will be integrated into whatever slick little 50W box is sitting behind my display.

I'm hoping for a 5070 16GB model but I've heard mixed opinions on whether it'll be 12GB or 16GB. I care nothing for DLSS but I do want to be able to do 3D graphics and video editing (10-bit 4:2:2 H265) without proxies. The games I play are all either 1080p 144hz or not graphically demanding even in 4k.

I might just try to get a second-hand card on the cheap for upgrading the PC from its ancient (and flawed) GTX970 and put the rest towards a Mac Studio M4 Max 64GB and call it a day.

AMD next gen GPU reveal at CES 2025 was a no show but info starting to trickle out is hopeful such as noticeable improvement to FSR4 over FSR3.1 downscaling.

And, rumor is that the 9070XT was delayed to fine tune performance with rasterization around 7900XTX and 4080 Super and RT around 7900XTX and 4070ti. If true and priced right it could be a strong option.

Yeah out as well. As the "work" use for the gaming PC is now over it has been disassembled and sold in chunks on eBay.

I was quite shocked that on X-Plane 12 my base M4 Mac Mini was nearly as good as the 14900k+RTX4060 crate. Think that uses Metal upscaling anyway. Looks fine at 5k! :)

Which more or less scales with transistor count, power usage and price.

Or in other words no real progress (in raster) has been made since 30 series and the 5090 should really be called 3120.
