It's a start...
As if the quality of education in NY wasn't already lacking.
Nothing is really "free", still congrats and I hope it works out for them.
I think it's a great idea.
Hilarious part is the kids who already are in massive debt and graduated get to pay for their tuition while paying taxes to pay for current students as well.
Any retroactive measures here? Or is there just a gap of ****ed students?
Yup pretty much. There was a point where NYC public colleges were all free anyway. Feels like we are back right where we started. Of course, costs were much lower than. Will be interesting to see how this ends up panning out. Luckily I went to a private college so I don't feel cheated by this
I can agree with this as long as admission standards and progress are increased or kept high. Student loans should be eliminated.
I support providing a University education to everyone without direct personal cost, but let's not pretend that it is free.
I would support an effort to relieve these students of their debt, but "past performance does not necessarily predict future results."
To be honest, of all the states I'm pretty surprised this is coming out of NY first.
Maybe I will consider going to a REAL school this time if I qualify (by income I certainly qualify) instead of the worthless ITT Tech that I already graduated from.
Good to hear. That's my home town and a lot of people will benefit from greater access to schooling and skill learning.
I would certainly take advantage of the opportunity if I still lived there.
Obviously it is paid for by taxes, but in normal use free refers to no cost to the end user.
They can share sob stories with people thrown in prison for marijuana charges in states where it is now legal.
You can't possibly compare criminal activities with a financial agreement and the fact that those students in debt will also play for the other kid.'s college
Hope they are smart about it and require 2.5 gps and above. Refer to Carlos mencia for the gps joke
I love how that word gets thrown around with complete disregard for its definition.
I was waiting in line at Timmies once and some young lady mentioned something about free healthcare and got bitched out by an older lady who reminded her that tax money pays for that care. I wanted to start a slow clap.
I might be an outlier here but I don't think college education should be "free". I view college as an investment in ones future, not as an entitlement.
That said, college should be affordable. As in students should be able to pay their way through college without the support of family. Maybe that means taking a loan. I always thought it bizarre that financial aid was based off parents income when dealing with an investment in the child.
Key word: affordable, not free.
I like free with caveats. 3.0 min gpa or pay back the loan
I suppose you want slave reparations as well. Back pay to all families that had slaves in their past.
Come to think of it, I would like my portion of the TARP bailout socialist payment that went to banks and mortgage firms, that used the money for bonuses paid back to me.
Now they need to get rid of the family earnings cap. K-16 should should be covered for everyone.
I feel sorry for the people making over the cap after all of their deductions are in place. Dual income families are going to get hosed. Not enough money to pay for their kids school but on the hook to pay for their neighbors children.
Actually anyone living today who was a slave should get reparations. Going to be a bit of a hard sell to get one group of kids to pay 50k off over the next 10-15 years for something that is essentially free now and they are paying taxes for.
So the taxpayer is supposed to pay for pseudo-science courses like "gender studies" and "basket weaving". Really?
Nothing here to sell. I don't want to pay for another aircraft carrier, but I don't get a voice in it.
I would be persuaded by your argument if those sentenced to prison for life on minor drug offenses were released because the law and sentence were reduced for current offenders.
With that said, I would like to see some relief for the enormous student debt. Maybe congress could change the law and allow the debt to be refinanced at a lower interest rate. Can't have that, government makes too much from those loans. Instead of complaining about a state that is doing something. Let's hear thoughts about the great Republican congress enacting legislation to help those past student out a bit.
Yeah - taxes that are already incredibly out of control. Just what working-class people need. It aint free at all. You also have to figure that there will be plenty of qualified kids shut OUT of the progrqam due to the fact theat they'll no doubt jam some "diversity" crap into this formula. Thats just a PC way of saying "limit the number of white kids who get in".
Why not just institute free everything for everybody forever? Thats the wet-dream, isnt it?
