Seriously?

A Republican candidate for New York State Senate planned to offer voters fried chicken, Kool-Aid and watermelon at a campaign event in a primarily black community in Harlem,NBC4 reported Thursday.

New York State Senate candidate Jon Girodes told NBC4 about the event in an email he exchanged with the network about a month before Election Day.
“Ps I’m hosting an event in Harlem which will be in front of the state building in a few weeks," he wrote in the email.

"We will [donate] Kool Aid, KFC and watermelons to the public on 125th street in Harlem. Please join us to help the community."

The district in which Girodes is running includes the historically black communities of Harlem and East Harlem.

Residents of the district told NBC4 that Girodes's plan was "racist" and "more than an insult."

Seems like pandering, or it could be completely coincidental.

Or worse,

"We will [donate] Kool Aid, KFC and watermelons to the public on 125th street in Harlem. Please join us to help the community."
Noting American history, those particular items tend to play into stereotypes more than anything else.

At least he's not in China:

Chinese state media has criticised anti-US protests outside KFC outlets across China as jingoistic, saying they do "a disservice to the nation".

(snip)

In recent days, small groups of protesters have gathered outside KFC outlets, starting in Hebei and spreading to other places including Changsha and Hangzhou, media reports said.

They have shouted anti-US slogans and held up banners with the words "Get out of China, KFC and McDonalds".

In some of the videos of protests which were posted to Sina Weibo, police can be seen intervening.

What have state media said?
The state Xinhua news agency said: "This is not the right way to express patriotism."

The China Daily newspaper said: "Instead of being patriotic, it is their jingoism that does a disservice to the spirit of devotion to the nation.

meh. rookies.
Achille Lauro used to give a brand new left shoe to each voter in Naples. If elected, he gave the right one.

Sounds like he had a winning strategy.
Yep.
Piece of trivia. The Achille Lauro ship takes the name from him and was the setting of the famous Achille Lauro hijacking in which an American died and caused a huge diplomatic crisis between US and Italy. Right after hijacking the ship, the PLO terrorists helped by Tunisia were able to get on a 747 trying to escape. Before departure from Sigonella (Italy), US delta force was able to intercept the plane. However, since Italy was trying to arrest the terrorists without extraditing them, the Italian police first, and the Italian army later, pointed the guns at the Americans and protected the terrorists. The Italians also threatened to blow up an American plane that illegally landed and parked in front of the 747 (to keep it from moving).

Neat. Thanks for sharing! I tried to look him up but kept coming up on the hijacking.
