WASHINGTON – Fed up with waiting, President Barack Obama announced Saturday he would bypass a vacationing Senate and name 15 people to key administration jobs, wielding for the first time the blunt political tool known as the recess appointment.

------------------

On this I agree completely. It's about time the President started standing up to obstructionism.

President George W. Bush made more than 170 such appointments in his two-term presidency. President Bill Clinton made nearly 140.

Hey I don't start many threads but this one picked me up. I've been waiting for Obama to start standing up to those people that wish to just say no.

There is no compromising with the GOP. It's time the Democrats leave them behind and move America into the 21st century.

Probably all former detainees from Guantanamo... ;)

Nice retort.

The 15 appointees to boards and agencies include the contentious choice of union lawyer Craig Becker to the National Labor Relations Board. Republicans had blocked his nomination on grounds he would bring a radical pro-union agenda to the job, and they called on Obama not to appoint Becker over the recess.

Every party blocks presidential nominees and every president takes advantage of recess appointments. I just wish there wasn't so much hypocrisy here! A month ago Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT) was screaming about all the 'blocked nominees' even though he alone was responsible for individually blocking a dozen of Pres. Bush's nominees during Bush's first term! It's become juvenile in my opinion!

So you see no problem with Obama doing it ?

A simple yes or no will suffice.

Obama's got about 50 czars so far that have had no Congressional oversight whatsoever. 15 more appointments of folks sharing his socialist vision means only the sewer just got deeper, that's all.

And 'no' I don't see a "problem" with Obama doing it; it is his right as president, as other presidents have done. I just wish he would appoint more people qualified for the positions they are nominated! TSA Chief is a good example...he's 0-2 on that...

I wonder what it's like for conservatives to be constantly living in fear.

Obama is a Nazi
Obama is a Socialist
Obama is a Muslim Terrorist

Agreed, both parties block or try to block appointments from the other party. Also, both use recess appointments. There was a lot of whining when President Bush appointed John Bolton as the US ambassador to the UN, and I'm sure there will be whining about these appointments from President Obama. To me, it is a non-issue.

Just to put it into perspective, at this time in Spring 2002 there were 5 (that's five) of Bush's nominees blocked. 77 of Obama's are blocked. By this time, Bush had already made 10 recess appointments. These are Obama's first.

You're holding Obama to far higher standards than Bush. Bush was known for his non-qualified "clown" recess appointments.

Why would a czar need oversight? They're just advisors....

It is these types of posts by members here that make me not take the poster seriously

Most conservatives do not hold these opinions. These posts are merely flame bait, adding nothing of value

Nice try. Obama has 38 czars. Bush had 35.

So what's your limit on the number of czars until it's a problem? Is it conveniently 35? Or is it unlimited for republicans, zero for Democrats? Or is it stick your fingers in your ears and pretend you can't hear the facts?
Not to mention there is no official title of czar. It is media lingo.

Also, of the current "czars", only 8 have been appointed by Obama.
