"Obama will allow gays to serve openly in the military by overturning the controversial 'don't ask, don't tell' policy.

President-elect Barack Obama will allow gays to serve openly in the military by overturning the controversial 'don't ask, don't tell' policy that marred President Clinton's first days in office, according to incoming White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

The startling pronouncement, which could re-open a dormant battle in the culture wars and distract from other elements of Obama's agenda, came during a Gibbs exchange with members of the public who sent in questions that were answered on YouTube."

as long as people do their role and not let their lifestyle or issues affect others or their job (gay and straight alike), i have no problem with what they do or how they do it on the job

I could go either way on this. In the current DADT policy, gay people can serve in the military, just not openly. Why does it need to be known that someone is gay. It's not a Sexual Orientation forum, it's the Army!

Because you have to lie about it the whole time, and if anyone finds out you'll be kicked out. How is that OK? Do you honestly expect me to believe that heterosexual soldiers don't talk about their partners/spouses? A person should not have to hide his identity in order to keep a job.

While I agree you shouldn't be kicked out if you're gay, I don't see any situation in which the subject would come up. (Unless you mention it to someone, of course...)

You're not very familiar with the living situation of people in the army are you?

Funny how you edited it after I posted that to make me look like an idiot. When I responded to it, it ended with "How is that OK?"

I didn't edit it to make you look like an idiot. I edited it for clarity. Don't take things so personally.

What an overly simplistic and deliberately inflammatory term "culture wars" is to use in a news report...

... Ah, Fox "News", that would explain it.

    EDIT:

I agree, I can't imagine a single situation where a room full of squaddies would ever discuss sex.

Let's hope the redneck bible bangin' soldiers don't target the openly gay soldiers and say "Oops! It was friendly fire"

You can bash me all you want for saying that. I don't give two sh^%ts. I wouldn't put it past some soldiers.
