It seemed more than a x.5 update to me.
But Mac OS X was on it's way, and there was one major upgrade left, which had to be called Mac OS 9. ;)

I was just coming into Macs at the time, and I remember liking System 8.5 far more than 8.1. It looked much better with its updated Platinum theme, and IIRC all icons were now 16-bits (instead of 8-bits in 8.1) making them look far nicer.
Sherlock was cool too. Indexing was a bit of a dog, but it worked!

Firstly, it's Mac OS 8.5, not System.

Secondly, the '030s were obsoleted with the introduction of OS 8.0, and some at OS 7.6.

It'd be nice if people actually knew what they were talking about.

Yep, Mac OS as of 7.6.

That depends who you ask. 7.5.1 was the first to refer to itself as "Mac OS" during bootup, but it was sold as System 7.5. You're correct in that 7.6 was sold as Mac OS 7.6, but it referred to itself as System 7.6 in the About window. OS 8 was the first to be "Mac OS" all the way through.
