Oh Tennessee- you can't seem to race to the bottom fast enough.

I don't know what is more disgusting. The petition, trying to prevent a gay student( who didn't even write the article) to attend the ceremony, or the board member trying to get a criminal investigation into the faculty member that allowed the article to be put into the yearbook.....

There's so much wrong here that it's unbelievable. I read some comments around the web, and it seems like most people in that town are against the article and that poor kid.

Some of the comments on that page are disgusting.

Makes me glad I went to the school I went to. I was on the newspaper staff. One issue we did a feature on LGBT issues. We had interviews with openly gay students, we had op eds in support of gay marriage (we couldn't even find anyone on staff that was against it, so it was a very one sided op ed). The issue was very well received by students and faculty, No one tried to stop anyone from attending graduation because no one gave a ****. This was 10 years ago, right when the marriage equality debate started in this country and an overwhelming majority were against it.

Unfortunately, I didn't keep that issue (or any of them for that matter, a small regret from my HS years) because back then I didn't see the feature as a big deal. I never thought in 2012 I would want to look back on it and realize "Holy ****, we were pioneers in high school journalism and ahead our times" and be proud of my contributions to that issue because I wrongly assumed any HS could do an issue on LGBT rights and not face any flak. How naive I was back then....

It's some times hard to believe that this is the same country that FDR back in 1941, gave speech about the Four Freedoms.
Nearly eighty years later and you are going backwards.:(

Religion at it's finest, folks. Why does this sick institution even exist anymore? (Religion, not education! :p)

From this thread and a lot of past ones similar to it it seems to me that there are a lot of rednecks in the states

Here is an idea for a yearbook:

The yearbook contains nothing except pictures of each student with their names. No ""Class favorites, no "Most likely _____" honors, or any other opinionated crap. Just pictures and names (group pictures too). And then at the back of the book are some blank pages that allow for each student to write whatever they want in it. They can even write in their own "Best _____" and "Most likely _____" honors.

I probably wouldn't have been allowed on the yearbook committee. :D

That's how all the Yearbooks when I was in school was like. Faces, names, sports teams, group photos (usually popular kids) and, blank pages for to get your Yearbook signed. We didn't have anything else in it. :/

He's gay so he shouldn't be able to graduate...I had to read that twice in a state of stupor...it's like "uhh, guys, seriously, WTF is wrong with you?". I feel really bad for that kid as the student and board reaction shows just how harsh the climate is there...I bet high school was hell on earth for him.

Not surprising. Maybe some things were better when we didn't put so much thought into them. I don't remember my yearbooks because I never purchased one. I think my photo is only in my freshman yearbook because I was in the band photo. I never had my photo taken for the class pictures. I was an angry child.

There are, but up north we know how to keep them in their place. Unfortunately they run wild in the south. Luckily i don't encounter these people in my daily life.

Christian rednecks seem to be the worst when it comes to gays.

That seems kind of redundant. Every redneck I've ever met is a religious Christian. I've never met a Buddhist redneck ;)

The reminds me, I still have my class pictures from P.S., back in the late 40's/early 50's. Also have my H.S. yearbooks.

Should scan them into HAL*, for a giggle.

Yeah, there is no such thing as a non-christian redneck. If they do exist they're a rarity and will be shunned by their fellow rednecks.

Weirdly this type of thing would be promoted in the UK.

edit: Not weird that its promoted, I think its a good thing to do. But weird that in the US there's such a kneejerk reaction to it.

Yet, many of them would jump each other's bones while watching lesbian porn - if the money was right.

    ****ing double standard.

I've always said the South should secede from the union.

We'll have the Liberal North and the Conservative South.

Of course, the vast majority of those who are in the military are from the south....................... ****.

There used to be a bunch in Oregon. Buddhist hippie rednecks. Surely there must still be some left somewhere in Ecotopia?

It's amazing how big of a deal is being made of this. Isn't it funny how that whole right to free speech and press seems to be forgotten when it comes to discussing homosexuality?... Our tax dollars are being spent by school officials on...this? Apparently proms don't force sexuality but writing about being gay does...wtf? School officials are talking about reprimanding those involved with writing and publishing the article. And the article detailed how hard this poor kid's life was, largely due to other student... School officials SHOULD be reprimanding those who allowed bullying to continue towards a student due to their sexuality and discussing how to prevent bullying in the future. They've got it all bass-ackwards down there...
