Thomas Knapp hits it out of the park where Trump and the Republicans spending bill is concerned. The military welfare program continues apace and they're taking even more money from the taxpayers and our descendants to fuel their dreams of empire. When will the so-called "fiscal conservatives" stop lying and do some serious cutting? Never, because they're just as bad as the tax and spend crowd on the left. Their welfare recipients are the military industrial complex and not the masses.

Shutting down the govt would have been the alternative, and I'm sure the Dems carved out some cash in exchange for the military spending.

Either way the republican fiscal conservative talk from the Obama era was clearly ********, but we already knew that.

The only party that "won" at the passing of this bill is the military-defense industry.

    Meh.

Well, China manages to spend about a third of what we do on their Military and they seem to be more productive towards their geopolitical goals. Russia spends a lot less...and they seem to be doing fine also <cough>. Whatever. Bummer.

Yes, them and other government "contractors", like a 2 person electric or food delivery company winning contracts that worth half a billion to several billions.

The increase OVER the requested budget for the military alone would have paid for universal community college.

We're getting to a point where we are going to have to admit the empire project is the driver of social unrest in the country. We've cut every welfare system past the point where they operate correctly, yet continue to push for more cuts while stacking military contractors with more money than their lobbyists even asked for.

    Rome 2.0.

Prussia is not a state that has an army, it is an army that has a state.

That’s what happens when your military is literally everywhere in the world (SpecOps were in 160 countries at the end of 2016, a dramatic escalation that occurred under Obama). Our supply lines are simply spread too far. All our money goes to maintenance of our footprint. Countries that aren’t spread that thin have way more of an ability to build new, rather than maintain decay.

A billion for military contractors enabling us to go meddle around the world, HURRAH! A program for poor children or citizens, BOO, we just can’t afford that! The problem? Their base, the voting base that keeps them in office seems to be getting poorer by the year.

Lest anyone think that the democrats didn't get loads of goodies, too, we have this tweet from Rand Paul. Seriously? We're giving military aid to the friggin' Vietnamese? Last I checked they're still communists. Even though these numbers aren't in the billions, I cannot help but wonder what they might have funded if that money had been kept at home, or just never taken from the taxpayers.

Sen. Paul is cherry-picking, a classic Republican trope that ignores the great volume of spending on a few massive defense projects, not to mention two worthless tax cuts made since 2001 that took billions from federal coffers while creating rather little economic benefit.

To be fair, Paul has called them out on all the spending, even the republicans pet projects like defence, intel and war spending. Yeah, he toes the line on some stuff, but he's against some seriously bad stuff the others are for, like torture and surveillance.

Paul is better than some, but he's still putting the old McCain trick of finding something that sounds absurd and complaining about it without acknowledging the huge budget outlays that are really the problem.

You can complain about spending $10 million on female cops in Afghanistan after you figure how the Pentagon lost $1 billion in cash during the Iraq War, or pissed away $125 billion in five years on administrative waste.

Well, China has figured out that it's cheaper to co-opt and invest in a Country than pursue a military option. Also more influential ...<feel free to insert russia joke here>

As we did with the Marshall plan....

You make more friends by building bridges than bombing them, regardless of the geopolitical strategy behind them.

April 2018- Listened to a clip of retiring Speaker Ryan this morning continuing to push the narrative that our Military is badly in need of repair and the GOP is eager to spend billions more than 50% of the budget already spends. What militarized planet does the GOP live on? Oh, yeah, planet Earth.

It’s depressing that we have citizens who’d rather have tanks and bombs for wars than fixing infastructure and a healthy society. This really is a dereliction of duty and will only change when elections shift the military industrial complex equation among our Congressmen and women. :(

But if you don't support the troops (military), you're unpatriotic. </s>

FWIW, I believe it's possible to support the troops without supporting the military.
