Once downloaded, iTunes makes it's own copy of the file?

If I download a song or even when I rip from my DVDs, iTunes won't use that file but it will instead make a copy of it and save into its own file directory. Does it always do that? So is the only way to save space to delete the file that I just downloaded or ripped?

Preferences > Advanced > Uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Music folder"
