    .. is this normal?

I would have expected at least 2 days use on a brand new battery/iphone!

what gives.. the 3G network draining it? I dont use it to make many calls, a few sms text messages and stuff

    any ideas? TIA :)

If you do any web browsing or have push mail turned on it definitely won't last more than a day.

    Two things:

    1) If you are a medium-heavy user of 3G/wi-fi internet browsing and things of the sort you can pretty much expect to have to charge each night.

    2) If the phone is new it really helps to put that first full charge cycle on it to get the battery fully "calibrated." Charge it all the way up and then leave it on charge for a while, maybe an hour or two. Then take it off charge and start using it until it dies (you'll see a screen with a kind of "please charge" symbol). Make sure its all the way dead and then charge it up fully again. That will help you get the battery up to full capacity. When the phone first came out the battery life seemed awful, but after the first day or so when people figured out to do this it was more than tolerable.

    Good luck!

You can bridge two days by being a power-miser. Essentially when you have WiFi turn OFF 3G, turn off Auto-Brightness, Fetch email less often (when you wish to check just hit the sync icon in Mail).

There have been a few situations where I've been able to get 7 hours Usage and 30 hours Standby. That's being extremely careful and using Airplane Mode in poor reception or when I can't answer calls.

Location Services, 3G, Push are your enemies; don't expect more than 5 hours Usage. Dive into for suggestions and details.
