At this point, why not just plug it in with the actual cable. This is what I don't understand.

I have an older Belkin wireless charger I got from Apple for my 11PM last year and I place my phone on it at night before I go to bed. When I get up, I just pick my phone up. This is what I think of when I hear "wireless charging". The moment I have to use another hand to remove the source of power, I might as well just plug it in.

It saves wear on the connector.

You're transferring wear from the connector to the glass back of the iPhone. Over time, I'm sure there will be some sort of wear where the MagSafe charger makes contact with the glass, especially if there happens to be dirt and grit on either surface.

I'm super rough on my phones (since the iPhone 3) and don't use cases; none of my connectors ever wore out.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people will really like MagSafe, but personally I just don't understand the point as much as I'd like to. At least at this time.

It would seem that the goal of magsafe will be to be able to charge your phone while you use it if/when Apple goes portless. It will no doubt improve as time goes on.
This is honestly the only sensible reason why MagSafe was introduced; it's a test for the future port-less phones.

I was hoping it might have Bluetooth or something to also provide data. Maybe that is next. I know Bluetooth is slower than USB but it would be the trade off for now if you wanted a completely “wireless” connectivity.

I totally agree. They just need to re-think the cable length and/or cable interchangeability.

Anyone know if Apple has a patent on the Magsafe tech? My thoughts are that similar to lightning, they want to get a cut (i.e. royalty payment) of every accessory that uses "Magsafe."

If so, it's an obvious squeeze for money knowing they have to remove the lightning port in the next few years. It keeps the accessory cash cow producing.

I agree; that's the real reason behind magsafe imo. You can now lift and use your phone while charging wirelessly; solves one of the big portless objections.

There could honestly even be chargable Mag-Safe disks. You charge the disk and its available for travel or whatever to stick on the back of the phone when you need to power it on.

That would be a game changer I think.
Maybe a MagSafe AirTag....

Wonder if they'll come out with a higher power version for MacBooks? It could snap onto the laptop's lid. (Right over the Apple logo, ha!)

That would take "MagSafe" back to its roots: Stopping a $1000+ MacBook being dragged off a desk when someone trips on the cable.

I’m not surprised the wallet is a little wonky. Magnets are magnets and they have inherent limitations. Hoping things will stay together in a tight jeans pocket seems ambitious. The charger seems to work exactly as I’d expect. That’s what I’m here for, so I’m still happy.

I was considering the wallet, but not after that video. The magnets looked really weak. Too easy to lose your wallet that way.
His was the only video I saw where it looked weak tbqh... I like the possibilities of it though. It probably just needs to be a more magnetization towards the back of the wallet and maybe more magnet blocking too...I see this as a start. I’m gonna try it to see what its like in everyday use Rather than demo unit use.

Just canceled my order for the wallet AND I'll be returning my Peel case that I bought to pair with it. Ordering my usual Smartish Wallet Slayer to go with my Mini. Just saved myself $70 because of this thread. Thanks, OP!

Apple just trickling in their technology (before portless iPhones) so they can sell very high margin accessories. Like LIDAR, does anyone need magsafe yet?
This seems to be the going theory so now I’m wondering: what is the benefit of a portless iPhone with MagSafe (or something like it) as the new way? I assume we’d still have speakers, microphones, SIM card doors. So there would still be other openings. Just wondering what the point of portless is? Not saying it’s good or bad.

Yeah magsafe seems limited. I will likely cancel my wallet order, but I think it still has potential for some accessories, like detachable external battery packs. It will align better with the charger as well.
