opening pdf link in word with safari

I am making a list of websites for work and the sites happen to be pdfs. When I open them from my word document they open in safari but generate a bunch of gibberish characters and not the original article. When I copy that same link and put it into firefox, it works just fine. How do I get the articles to open up by clicking them and keep safari as my primary browser? Thanks for any advice or help you can offer.
