hey gents, i'm trying to breath some new life into my mid 2013 mba. i scored a deal for a 240gb owc ssd for 160 new, however one thing keep bothering me, owc ssd doesn't support trim and thats not owc's fault but apple doesn't allow trim for 3rd party ssd. i could spend another 40 bucks and get a pulled ssd from another macbook, but its likely used and 40 bucks more expensive. which do you guys recommend?

Go for the genuine Apple drive.
Apple now allows enabling trim on 3rd party drives so the problem with the OWC is a hardware problem not an Apple one.
And the reviews I've seen also show serious performance problems with the OWC.

Me, I would go with the Apple drive if you have that option. That said, I installed OWC SSDs as capacity upgrades into MBA for my wife (programmer) and daughter (movie collector). They've worked well for years.

All of the OWC SSDs I've used or recommended that others use in Airs have failed. 4 in total. I'd buy a used Apple one before buying any SSD from OWC.

Does anyone know the controller for the 2011 MBA and the controller for a WD or Samsung or Crucial SSD?

Different SSD makers use different controllers to differentiate their product lines. One maker could use two or three different controllers with their own custom firmware.

I've thought of buying an OWC SSD for my 2014 Macbook Pro. Is there another option besides OWC aside from a genuine Apple SSD?

Also not a fan of OWC. Have no experience with their drives, but, just about every RAM stick we've ever bought from them has failed. Latest failure was six months ago. Got replacement warranty OWC RAM, not even putting it in the machine (I didn't buy it, colleague did). Talk to any independent repair shop, they'll tell you the same, they too see it all the time.

There are plenty options; Samsung, Crucial, Kingston, Patriot, Western Digital, HP, and more...

I think OWC sucks big time actually, I don't know why they portray themselves as the best Apple option when they clearly are not. I've read scandals upon more crap about their products for years now. Their Sandforce controllers are total junk.

Hmm okay. I've looked around but cannot find any. I'm only seeing the 2.5" style size. Not the stick version with the notch in the connector end.

ah okay what is the key set-up M and B keys?
Not sure what you mean by that. Anyways I'm looking at the Samsung SSD sticks and none of them would work in my MBP cause the notch in the connection end is not in the right spot. It wouldn't fit.
