Ok speculation time here .. where is Palm Desktop for OS X.. supposed to be out by the end of the year..even acknowledged by their CEO for release this year. No sign .. not even a beta.. funny that neither Palm of Handspring are scheduled to attend MWSF. Sure they will be at CES instead. Ok so the lack of release is a huge blunder on Palm's part or they don't care what Mac users think .. not that I am discounting either of these possibilities... but what about a new i-app which actually replaces the Palm Desktop and is released by Apple vice Palm. Ok OK I know based on the anti-PDA sentiment around here I may be hanging myself here but I am not suggesting an Apple branded PDA, though it would be great.. I really want and need a Palm desktop for use under OS-X.. it is the only major app I am having to deal with 9 for. Just a thought about another suprise from Apple. In light of neither major PDA maker being at the show .. I am really hoping this comes true..

wow

...that is strange that neither will be there

if steve jobs said there wasn't a need for an apple pda, i do remember that was awhile ago

a month and especially six months is a long time in the IT field and things could always change very quickly

and apple is small enough to change their strategy fairly quickly compared to a slow, big company like IBM

Quite likely

I agree that the absence of any news on Palm Desktop for OS X is suspicious. It's also strange that no mention was made of Palm syncronisation when Microsoft released Office v.X. As far as I can see, many of the features in Entourage are of little use until it can sync with a Palm.

It is quite easy to imagine Apple developing the iApp you describe, and it seems very consistant with their digital hub/iApp strategy. They are likely to focus on this area if they can deliver Mac only features, or an improved plug & play experience.

Perhaps we might see:
- PDA mounted on the desktop to drag and drop files
- An option for the Palm to automatically Snyc when you plug it in
- A PDA folder in your Home directory, the contents of which synch with your PDA
- Integration with iMovie & iPhoto to create slide shows, movies and screen savers on your PDA
- Support for PocketPC (perhaps licensed from PocketMac)
- Any other ideas?

If Apple are developing such an iApp, it would explain why Palm, Microsoft & Apple have been so tight-lipped on the subject.

re: iapp

it seems like the concept of an apple iApp seems to be the most logical conclusion and i agree

they might even call it that

Well spotted Ensign!

Hmmm, maybe we won't see iPDA any time soon after all.

We still have to wait for the Entourage Conduit though...

Bah!

Ok now who in their right mind at Palm had the forthought to only allow 150 downloads at once.. guess they don't believe in mirroring? Anyone mirroring yet?

not a lot of help at Palm

Two things:
(1) There is now a 300 user maximum and the URL is:
ftp://ftp.infoyouaskedfor.com/pub/palm/PalmDesktop40MacENG.sit
so you don't have to register on Palm's site unless you want to give them marketing info.

(2) Interesting, I have been trying to work through some HotSync issues with my Palm Vx. I actually got this e-mail from Palm at 4:23 YESTERDAY. Aparently thirty minutes later, they release the beta version. A$$holes.

<* Palm Desktop for Mac OS X *>

Palm, Inc. is hard at work on 'carbonized' Mac OS X versions of Palm
Desktop and HotSync Manager software for release later this year.

For information updates regarding the use of your Palm handheld with Mac
OS X, please visit our Web site at the following URL:

To get it to sync

The only way I have been able to get my USB adapter (Palm) and my I-300 with the Cube is to unplug and replug the USB cord each time, click on the Conduit Manager to open a sync connection on the desktop machine then start the synch via your handheld.. it seems to work for me each time now after having a real hard time to get it working intitially.. hope this helps
