Picked up Apple Store - Activated?

I picked up my iPhone at local Apple Store, when they scanned it, my current 5 went dead, no signal. Does it activate when they scan it at the store?

Yep, that happened to my S5 when I purchased the 6 Plus on launch day. After they scan and the upgrade went through, my S5 still showed signal, but calls and texting did not work.

Yes. Mine was activated (and my old phone deactivated) before I even unwrapped the plastic in my 6.

Ok, that answers my question, and yes when they scanned the box. I tried to make a call on my way home and it wouldn't go through, I was like wtf.

Once it's activated I imagine you still have to put the sim card in the new phone.
