So I've been considering selling my iPhone 3GS on ebay, and obviously I'll want as much for it as possible. It is currently using iPhone OS 3.1.3 and is not jailbroken or unlocked.

Should I avoid upgrading to iOS4, assuming that it will be some time before it will be unlockable, and that this will lower resale value? Or does it not matter?

I would advise using Craiglist over eBay. My 16GB 3GS sold for $380 but I got raped on fees.

380 with free shipping.
-15 shipping with insurance
-20 paypal credit card fees
-34 final value fees

= $311.

Somebody gets a good deal on CL for that price.

Why not make a comment in the ad that you can jailbreak or upgrade to 4.0 depending on what the purchaser chooses. Give them the option, that way you appeal to whoever wants to buy it.
