How do you forget that your own daughter is staying at your home for the holidays?

Shoot first, ask questions later. This is what happens when just about anyone can get a gun regardless of how reckless and irresponsible they are.

Plus she is a 911 operator and her husband is a cop so she seems to have ignored a lot.

It never says the daughter was staying at her house for the holidays. MIght have just arrived for a "surprise" visit. Might have been staying at a hotel and went out for drinks and in a drunken state remembered her old home address more than the hotel she was staying at. Who knows? Sad tragedy all around.

Says she was visiting for several days. That usually means staying there

My brother visits our parents from Long Beach all the time. He always gets a hotel.

Does he just pop in for surprise visits after 11pm?
If the daughter did that, then she is an idiot. I'm always open to more information.

Sounds like mom needs to learn to identify the target before she shoots. Put a nice 800-1600 luman light on her gun and she not only could do that but would momentarily blind the intruder too.

He has. Came in for a surprise visit one Christmas eve. didn't get into town till 11:30 and just came into the spare bedroom. Got a hotel the next day.

But also none of us own guns.....so at worst he would have been beat with a softball bat.

The word "HELLO" can save you from shooting your own child.

The reality is that for every 1 act of self-defense in the home, there are 22 accidental, suicidal or criminal shootings. The bottom line, is statistically speaking the chances of it being a home invasion were very low and had the mother not been armed, their family would've enjoyed the holidays together instead of grieving over this tragedy.

Up to the owner. Again, I think it should be mandatory for every citizen.

Meh, nothing us responsible gun owners can do about Suicides which make up the VAST majority of gun related deaths. People need to seek professional help if they are depressed. Accidents are minimal.

This goes back to the "I have a gun therefore I am invincible" gun mentality. Not thinking of the consequences of shooting first asking who was at the door later.
