Alright Texas, I'll give you credit when deserved, this is actually a really cool concept. I like nice stories like this!

Definitely a good idea. People in general are more likely to respond positively to positive reinforcement than negative punishment. Depending on the area, I think it'd be interesting to see this implemented in other places.

You must mean just the time they spend walking around it parking lots?

Is that on their own time?

Still, the people that donated funds might not appreciate the manner that those funds are used.

In a way, you get some of your own tax money back... isn't that a good thing?

I suggest that employ the Law of Total Probability, and let me know what you come up with. ;)

Rewarding people for good behavior? Encouraging them to obey traffic laws as to avoid accidents? Possibly saving people from injury or death?

Yeah waste of tax payers money. Oh wait, isn't it taxes that are paid to fund public safety in the first place?

    Reality check, bro. ;)

I agree with drowns. People should not be rewarded for doing what they are supposed to be doing. There shouldn't be a reward for not breaking the law. Also, I see this as inuring more badwill than goodwill as people no doubt seek out these cops/gift certificates, and the cops are put in an awkward position of picking and choosing.

If nothing else, if there is money in a government budget for something like this - gifting to random-ass citizens - something is inherently wrong with the budgeting and taxing and identifying important projects.

shouldn't people just have good driving practices no matter what?

people wonder where this sense of entitlement comes from these days, this only feeds into that.

Must be nice to live in dream land. It's just like a tip-hotline. Citizens are rewarded for giving information that they should be giving out anyway. Many of them don't until a reward is offered.

I'm not saying it's right but the moral fiber of society isn't exactly intact.

If giving out gift-cards causes people to slow down, think and save some lives then it's a good thing. It's no different than spending money on a drug-free campaign or bringing a wrecked car to a high school.

    Socialism, bro. :D

I can't believe you are for this given the political beliefs you've shared on this forum.

    Damn autocorrect!

I really don't think that this is really saving lives and all that. You're being approached while in a parking lot. If you don't treat the parking lot like a stretch of an Indy race then you get $10?

Do something else with the money; give it to schools, the hungry, or families who can't provide even a nice meal over the holidays.

This is Texas, the land where they only do toys-for-tots for documented kids. :D

make sure you apply it to the odds that your actual tax dollars went to those cards as well.

Ideas and ideals change. When I see something I believe is a good idea, I'll admit it. I also admit when I'm wrong and in this case I think it's subjective, however, there is enough to warrant both sides without it being a big issue.

It may not do a lot of good but I would also argue it's not doing any bad. If anything it is showing a police presence in the community and a sense of appreciation for those who obey the law.

I have no idea where Prosper, TX is (sounds like West Texas)...but if the drivers are anything like they are in Houston all they need to do to make everyone slow down is put a broken down car on the side of the road every mile or so.

I'm not sure what people are expecting to see...but I've never seen worse rubberneckers in all my life.

QFT. Most annoying thing ever. Sometimes there isn't anything on the side of the road and people slow down. I loathe 59S and I-45. EZTAG is my friend.

Heh - when I was living in Austin, it was common to see an empty Trooper vehicle in the median to get people to slow down. It seemed to be pretty effective!

It's a sad day when we have to bribe people to obey the law.

In other news, I didn't murder any of my insane, bitchy customers yesterday, can I have a new TV?

Yes, people should ONLY anticipate being PUNISHED for their behavior. You should NEVER PRAISE a CHILD for doing good, only SPANK them for doing bad. The BEATINGS will CONTINUE until MORALE IMPROVES.

    :D

Think of it this way: the gift cards aren't rewards for good behavior - rather, bad drivers are punished by being denied gift cards. ;-)

    ----------

No, but (assuming you're in the US and are a US citizen) you can remain free, outside of prison, with no felony record, you can bear arms, serve on a jury, vote, and run for office... That's quite a big reward - much more than many people in other countries get.

I don't like the excuse to make contact with otherwise law abiding citizens. It seems way too easy to manipulate this "free card" thing to make contact with anyone the officers want in order to do a quick visual/contact assessment.

Hello, thanks for driving the speed limit. By the way, is that marijuana I smell? Step out of the car.

And if they are "law abiding" citizens like you stated, this won't be an issue.

No, that's not true. An officer has to have a minimum level of suspicion to make contact with you. These "free cards" stink of an excuse to get around that requirement.
