Well, here is another great idea from the political fever swamps. And of course, now that his proposal has hit the wider media he is back-tracking like crazy. However, there is little doubt that this is what he actually believes.

This will not surprise those of you from the Mid-West who know that Madison, Wisconsin very consciously strives to be more progressive (read: crazier) than Berkley or San Francisco.

Hmmm, I wonder what University of Wisconsin-Madison would say if students began shoplifting the overpriced textbooks from the university bookstore?

Meanwhile, the homeless guy on the corner says he's the King of the World.

    Bow down, everyone.

    Bow down.

Those hashtags would suggest that theft and shoplifting is a legitimate way to redistribute wealth from a greedy, white supremacist, hetero-normative, capitalist patriarchy to the oppressed and underprivileged.

    Am I reading that correctly?

I don't know if this has always been a thing, or if it's a recent phenomenon, but to me, it seems we're less interested in debating actual concepts and ideas, and more about shaking our scarecrows at each other.

No need to abdicate personal responsibility.

Yes, because paying $30 for something from Walmart that cost 30 cents to make in China is highway robbery.

Should the police be protecting the interests of big business who have plenty enough money to deal with these issues themselves?

I think this is a very extreme case, however the same question has been asked over here with police protecting fracking sites from protestors, and protecting property investors who build poor doors into there buildings (again from protestors).

IMO this is a classic case of a news story that 20 years ago, would have had no coverage. (Or very little)

But in the internet age, the (oh golly gee) I’m offended generation, it takes on a life of it’s own.

People have always said silly/stupid things, but now days people can not only record them, but share it with the whole world.

This is not a right/left thing this is a people thing.

University of Wisconsin-Madison is robbed every time Everett Mitchell, Director of Community Relations, gets a paycheck.

I read the OP's linked article, and thought this was the best part.

The Director suggested community service as punishment for shoplifting ...

which got twisted into this by some state rep. ...

    1. Community service is a consequence.

    2. For his ability to twist another's words and resort to absolutist nonsense, I think Rep. Dave Murphy would make a fine PRSI member.

    1. How do you get community service without an arrest and prosecution?

    2. Nobody had to twist his unambiguous declarative statement that thieves who steal from Wal-Mart and Target should be immune from law enforcement.

Yet, according to your source, he said that they should have to do community service.

It's right there in your article.
