make calls go straight to voicemail, or turn of the ability to recieve texts temporarily. but not both at same time

If you still need a wifi connection on your phone, but want to turn off incoming calls and texts, place the phone on Airplane Mode, then turn on your wifi i the wifi menu right below the Airplane mode setting.

You may be able to disable phone calls using this method:
Dial *#67# to see which number is used to forward calls to VM.
Dial *21*number# to forward all calls unconditionally before you leave.
Dial ##002# when you return to restore the default settings.

personally I'd like to turn off the phone while maintaining 3G data or at least get a pop up (like texts) of the phone call rather than the phone 'app' totally wiping me out of what I was doing, usually remote desktopping.

Setting > call forwarding

You can get the correct number to forward to for your voicemail.

If your home on wifi you can put airplane mode on and turn wifi back on as another option
