I had this happen once too, turned out I was accidently on their "education" website. The price was a discount for students.

Just checked, still $1099 US and £999 UK, not sure why it’s come up at $999 on your end?

That was it. the google link sends me to the education store. It still let me place the order.

Price drop by Apple on an “unreleased” product, haha. You must be new to Apple :)

If Apple audits the purchase, you will be required to show proof you meet the edu discount requirements or you will be charged full price.

Nope, not always. They will check if you go pick it up from the store. Ik in the UK I heard it’s different, but here in US it’s quite easy if you ship your order with Ed discount

If you’re not part of education faculty or a student, why lie about it? Saving $50-$100 is worth a lie to you? You are sowing the seeds of your own failure.

Yes. It was worth it each time. Can’t lie. But then again apple started doing veteran discount and pretty much default to that now.

Now, now, don't be too harsh.
I'm sure we have plenty of members who would be willing to pay extra 100$ on top of regular retail price as AFT - Apple fanboys/girls tax :D
Quite sure Apple doesn't lose anything here, aside from reaching even wilder profit margins.
