A new study from Princeton spells bad news for American democracy, namely, that democracy no longer exists in America.

I know these are highly educated people but the United States has never been a Democracy. I'm sure they are smart but it undermines their credibility when they put out something like this.

So I guess we (the USA) no longer have any moral leverage to criticize Putin's Russia being a nation ruled by "oligarchs".

When you think about it that moral authority passed years ago, when in 2003 the US invaded a sovereign country, and showed the world that is OK to use force, to get what you want.

Putin is just following your lead in East Ukraine.:p

No disagreements there. Putin isn't doing anything that the USA hasn't already been guilty of.

But two wrongs don't make a right. However, three rights make a left. :D

I thought we were ruled by fear.

    Now we're ruled by transsexuals?

I think I'll stay in bed today.

How many times is this nonsensical meme going to be repeated here? Please describe what differentiates the US system of representative democracy from any other?

I believe America is being moved away from it's historical government when Professional Lobby corporations were given free hands to any Congressional member and the raise of Goverment "agencies" making their own "laws" (see the great expansion of Goverment "rules" lately) and the turn down the toilet bowl has started!

Was it just the U.S. or was it a coalition?

I would have assumed you'd at least have looked at the study and not relied simply upon the news article that writes about it.

If you haven't yet taken a moment to look at it, please do. Here is a link to the study (also available in the OP's article).

Please cite specific incidences in the study where you believe that the word "democracy" is used incorrectly and in ways that undermine the credibility of the people who conducted the study.

    Thank you.

The article says that policy decisions are being made by large business organizations and a few affluent individuals.

its OK, it's just American soldiers dying & American tax payers footing the bill, democrats & liberals seem to be ok with it as long as a democrat is leading the charge.

Instead of getting hung up on the term, how about addressing the issue? We are a representative democracy. As mentioned "democracy" is frequently used as a shortened term.

I am concerned... I find it interesting that those conservatives who preach about our values and the bedrock the country was founded upon, don't seem to be concerned all that much. They keep voting for a political party intent on handing power to the multi-national corporations. This could be the basis for a good futuristic story!

Yes. Despite the will of the people being exercised it's found that these other influencers wield more actual power in setting policy.

    Not surprising.

Still ... do we continue further down the path? Or do we enact the changes necessary to put the power back in the hands of the people?

What's really great is when those corporations/people routed their profits through shell companies to avoid taxes, and you still give them tax breaks.
