I would have just called local law enforcement and had the jackasses arrested.

I don't necc think they should be physically blocking her. But if she wanted to get into the school - if she really wanted to - she could have.

Well, the article said that she might've just used a different entrance.

If the optics are to make her look persecuted - I have little sympathy. Tiny protest and she still likely had access.

    I don't think she's persecuted.
I think that stopping the Secretary of Education from visiting a school and checking with the people on the field is not the smartest thing in the world.

Are we sure she knew it was a public schools she was going to? You know, seeing as she has little to no understand as to what they are and how they actually function?

I won't cry for her lost photo op.

I take it you missed the humor in my post? I was joking that she couldn't recognize a public school, seeing as her entire history with them is talking to donors/clients at GOP fundraising events about defunding them.

""My family is the largest single contributor of soft money to the national Republican Party … I have decided, however, to stop taking offense at the suggestion that we are buying influence," the piece reads. "Now, I simply concede the point. We expect to foster a conservative governing philosophy consisting of limited government and respect for traditional American virtues. We expect a return on our investment; we expect a good and honest government. Furthermore, we expect the Republican Party to use the money to promote these policies and, yes, to win elections." - Devos 1997 Op-Ed

^I'm not sure how to outline a more quid pro quo example than her.

Lol. Is she a Trojan horse to get the Dept of Education removed from the face of the Earth?

Oh, you have an ally in me on this. DeVos is an awful choice. I listened to long snipped of her confirmation hearing, and I was seriously unimpressed. A former school district's Superintendent would've been a much better choice. I hope to be proven wrong.

Unimpressed is one way of saying it. I was actually shaken by how naked this whole play is. She's there to divert funds and further the decades long assault on the notion that education should be a right in this country.

I agree, and this is one of the problems I have with my side of the aisle. Public Education is extremely important. Does it need fixes? Yeah. Should we throw it away? No.

personally in order to "fix" public education we need to change the way our society works as well. the level of stupid in this country is too damn high. this everyone gets a medal/passes class bull **** is why things are a mess, in Mexico if you fail ONE class you repeat the ENTIRE year , there are no remedial classes there, keep up or be left behind. how long before we engage in this stupidity?

parents are quick to blame teachers for their kids failures because OMG, Justin is smart, he already has a nice pattern when he is licking windows and that is the mark of a genius, and when he is eating his crayons he always makes sure he unwraps them first, give him an "a" or i'll sue you you lazy worthless overpaid union worker with your pension, I DON'T care if your pay sucks, my special snow flake is smarter than you with your degrees

I agree. Last year my teenage son was failing one class of high school (First year). I tried to terrorize him, etc. Then he spoke to the counselor. You know what the counselor told him? "Don't worry, you'll do a week of grade recovery and you're all set. We don't want to fail anyone."
    I was livid.

They shouldn't have blocked her from getting in, but at the same time I seem to remember the courts ruling that those Right wing terrorists that prevented employees from going to work at the wildlife refuge in Oregon were ok, so I don't feel too bad.

Well, we have a perverse system where funding is tied to "results". So basically if you want to keep the lights on, you have to keep students moving on whether they've developed or not. This is the entirely wrong way to go about actual education, but it's a direct result of the "run it like a business" mindset that has been installed in the annals of power on both sides of the aisle (one being far more extreme than the other, but having a murderer vs. someone punching you repeatedly in the face isn't much of a choice when it's in regards to a system).

Edit: Fixed typos. Typos in an educational thread? Shame, shame on me! :(

These people aren't anarchists, they're protesting to protect the integrity of a social service in the country, they're not going to be violent.

physically stopping her from entering and blocking the SUV as she is trying to leave is not doing those morons any favors, watch the video on link one, SEEMS she is trying to understand the issue by MEETING with school officials. just spitting on her face is not going to work the way it should.

Come on man. The right wing has talked for decades about how minority kids need to be "better educated and raised". Devos has been engaged in a philosophy that explicitly tears down the access to a common public education (by raiding the funds for it and advocating closure of "failing" schools) which explicitly will hurt the life chances of minority students disproportionately.

That's a BLM issue if I've ever seen one. You guys need to stop seeing BLM as being exclusively about police violence, if you'd bother to actually listen it never has been.
