TOKYO & SAN DIEGO, Nov 13, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- DIVX | charts | news | PowerRating -- DivX, Inc. (NASDAQIVX) today announced that DivX(R) video technology will be integrated into PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE). The popular computer entertainment system will be added to the ecosystem of devices that currently support DivX video playback. To date, over 100 million DivX Certified(R) products have been shipped into the market, and it is anticipated PS3 will significantly expand that number.

"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."

Products that bear the DivX Certified logo have undergone a rigorous testing program to ensure a high-quality DivX media experience that includes reliable video playback and excellent visual quality. DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date. PS3 game title developers will be able to utilize DivX's decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3's Software Development Kit to version 2.00, which was released by SCE on November 2nd.

More funcionality is always a good thing, I would bet that this is to not only support the video player in the PS3, but also to support content within Home.

This is very interesting. Additional codecs are always good. Now if they would just release a TV Tuner for the United States, I would be all set. Maybe I would quit griping about not having an in-game XMB. :)

Wow, great news - more codec support is always a good thing!

I have been seriously considering picking up a PS3 for a few games but also since it's a Blu Ray player, and hearing news such as this makes it looks even more attractive...

Making the PS3 more attractive as that media center of the living room...cool. I'm hoping that they release that tv tuner real soon...the vision will almost be complete.

~Shard~...this is the best time to chum down on one man...great games are here and in the works...its a wonderful machine and with time even better.

Bless

This is what the 360 needs. All 'Media Centers' for that matter, they should support as many codecs as possible.

I thought Divx was in an upcoming update for the Xbox 360? I remember reading about it somewhere  Something about a Fall update.

Nice one...Sony's starting to do a lot of things right now. I like their new commercials and R&C looks phenominal. I may have to get a Ps3 sooner rather than later :D

I don't actually have my PS3 on me right now... (it's loaned to a friend) but this looks interesting. Too bad I have no files in DivX.
