So I am assuming that the ethernet is the default mechanism if there is a cord plugged in? So if I have a hard wire, there is no sense in leaving the AP on for wireless, right? Would be nifty if OSX had a way to utilize both the wired and wireless hookup for increased connection speed; kinda like GCD or Open CL.

Don't know if there is a way to combine both, but you can use both share the connection from one to the other. It's what I do to connect to my NAS since I don't have a router. Get internet from airport and share to Ethernet.
