I'm eyeing a new phone. It's price is good even off-contract, so I'm thinking of trying that for a year while I wait for my contract to run out and I'll see what the scene is like then.

However, I have an iPhone 4S still under contract. I'm wondering if I get the new phone, switch my line to it, would AT&T unlock my iPhone? If not, what are my options?

I'd like to unlock it so I can sell it for more :)

You can either purchase an IMEI unlock off eBay (for a few bucks, Unlock Fusion is popular) or cancel your contract and pay the ETF, then AT&T will unlock (more expensive route).

if you use your upgrade your iPhone 4S will no longer be under contract. ATT will direct you to a website for you to request your 4S to be unlocked. the entire process took me about 2 business days.

I'm not using my upgrade -- I'm buying the new phone off-contract, so my contract will still be the same contract I'm on now.

if that's the case ATT will not unlock it for you until your contract is up.
