i was wondering, with the new files app, is it possible now to download files straight from safari? Or, specifically, download and save a video file from an email download link?

For now at least, it's the same old Download>Share>Files. It appears as if files still can't be read by apps directly from the Files App, still have to be duplicated.

Thank you for your response. So you can't download and save from an email link? I'm not sure I understand your answer. I have a client that sells video downloads. I'm wondering if we finally have a non-app based direct download pathway to iOS devices.

When you have a file (mail, safari) you tap it, open in Files and choose a location. Essentially a "Save as". Then any app that supports navigating to a Files location can open it from there. You can place it in an iCloud folder (as was previously seen with "save to iCloud Drive") OR on the iPad or iPhone locally (like a computer traditionally).

Also, it no longer actually duplicates the file. APFS sort of creates an alias to a file, not a duplicate of that file, when you open in an app.

This is very interesting to me. Say you open a document in Pages from files. Are you saying the changes you make to the document are saved in the original file?

Also, if you delete the file from where it was opened, is it no longer available in the app where the alias was created?

That much I unfortunately am not well versed enough to answer. I'd defer to a developer who perhaps attended the sessions

So I’ve had more success downloading links that I wasn’t able to before, but there’s no option to open in Files and still get the old share style sheet. Still waiting for a way to download music (legally) from places besides iTunes.

If you open a Pages document, it will save to wherever the file is stored. If you delete the file in Pages and choose the option to remove from iCloud Drive, it’s gone. Same way if you delete in Files, it will be gone and unavailable in Pages.

That's awesome! So now developers can actually read files from that common folder without having to store it?
Also, do you have a session link that explains this? Thank you :)

I haven’t experimented this behavior with third party apps. Apple is generally better at this stuff than third parties. Also, this just from me using the new OS personally, not from a WWDC session. But, if you watch these...

...they may answer your question in more depth. They may be up to an hour long and have some complexity, just a warning.

Thank you! Much appreciated. I've been an android developer for about two years, I think I can handle it (as far as complexity is concerned). ;)

Also, as long as Pages is an AppStore app, it has to abide by the rules of a third-party app shouldn't it? One exception I've found of this rule is GarageBand which allows you to add ringtones.

Well it’s Apple’s app, so technically they can do whatever.
